D3 RAW queery

My mate has a D3 and has recently bought PE8.
After explaining to him the benefits of shooting RAW or NEF as Nikon calls it, he decided to try it for himself.
He's not the most computer literate but I was surprised when he phoned yesterday to say that PE8 didn't recognise his RAW files where as the trial Nikon software did.
Surely as the D3 came out before PE8 the RAW files should be recognised.
Can anyone shed some light on this as I have no idea about how Nikon work?

I think the answer is he'll need the latest version of ACR (5.6) which will process D3 files.
 
That does seem a tad odd.
I have PSE7 with ACR 5.5 and got my D700 under 3 weeks ago. PSE7 opens the .NEF files.

The suggestion to update to ACR 5.6 is the right first step to try.
 
Elements 8 should open D3 files ok. you just need a newer update than the one it shipped with, 5.6 is the latest update for camera raw (as already said)
