Hi all just had my car broken into and had my nikon d2xs stolen just woundering what would be the mordern version, the insurance company are calling tomorrow....... d300? d3?

thanks all

Top of the range Dx body, I suppose - so a D300(?s). You could try arghuing the case for a D3 but if you have much Dx glass, it'll need upgrading unless you'll be happy with the auto cropping down to (based on D700 figure) around 5MP. You might even find a brand new D2xs on somebody's shelf - first call would be to Grays of Westminster and see what they've got left.

D3 surely.

D2XS would have been about £4k in it's day?

It should be like-for-like replacement no? ie full sized pro body. Not something that's worth what your D2XS is now worth second hand...?

At least - that's the way it is with my insurance company...

Thats what I was thinking. The D2xs isnt made anymore, so they have to replace it with the replacement model, or a model of equivilent new value.

I had an old PDA stolen a few years ago, second hand it was worth peanuts, but the insurance replaced it with a brand spanking new £400 version that was the equivelent.

D300(s) would be closer replacement in terms of sensor size but then something from the D3 family should be what your insurance shells out for.
Good luck finding somewhere with stock of the D3 though.
If you want to get a DX camera, push your insurer to replace with a D3(s/x), punt it as soon as you get it and get a D300(s) or a minty used D2xs and be £2-3k richer than you are right now.

If it's a policy that replaces like-for-like with the modern equivalent then surely it's going to be a D3 (x or s - can't remember which is which). I doubt they'll see a D300s as a direct replacement. I can't see them making the decision based on sensor size: they'll probably go by placement within the Nikon range... D2xs was top of the range so they replace with top of the range....

Had or a few years ago when my Pusmi G3 PowerBook broke - cost me £150 used but because it was top of the range back in 1999, they replaced with a top of the range MacBook pro.

D3s will be the direct replacement for the D2xs.

Do not get the D3x as it's pretty much a studio-only tool.

IMO, the OP would be better off financially with a D300(s) since then they probably won't need to upgrade any Dx lenses to Fx.

But he could get the D3x he is entitled too, sell it and buy whatever he wanted...

I disagree: despite the similarity in naming protocols used by Nikon, the D3x has no peer from a previous incarnation, due to it's lamentably bad iso performance above 400iso and the huge file sizes it generates. It's very much a studio-queen; not really suitable for general-purpose, news, sports, fashion or PR use.

Like for like, the D3s is more appropriate in terms of suitability for use.

He 'could' sell a D3x, but might take a big hit, especially if he needs a body in a hurry.

I meant s! Stupid Nikon with thier letters. My point is, dont ask them for the lesser D300s, get what he is entitled too, which is the closest replacement (D3S) and if he doesnt want it, sell it and buy 2 D300s's or a D300s and a nice lens. Insurers screw us most of the time, so dont let them get away with not giving you what you are due.

hi thanks for your help!! i had today and i am getting a d3s when they can find one!!

I was in Exeter on Saturday - I'm sure LCE had a D3s in the window! They certainly had a 300 f2.8 VR alongside it...... I didn't drool, honest

very nice and good luck to you on that, I know its not nice being broken into but that must soften the blow somewhat

It was still there the last time I looked as well...but that was two months ago...lol

Good to know it'll be nice and weathered by the time someone buys it...

If I remember, I'll have a look and see if it's still there next week.
