Just out of interest what settings do you find works best for you on your D200 specifically in terms of:

Image Sharpening - I leave mine on Normal.
Saturation - again I am set to Normal.

Any tips as I don't think I am getting the best out of this at the moment. FYI I always shoot raw and do a little CS2 sharpening before printing.

Cheers,

Bob

I use the same settings as you Bob except mine is always set to +0.3EV, sometimes +0.7 depending on the conditions as I've always found Nikons to underexpose slightly, it was the same with my D70.

Ditto you both ... ... but even though I know there may be a slight tendency to under-expose I prefer the slightly under-exposed shot and would rather sort it in post-processing ...

I used to as well but found that trying to PP the correct exposure back in introduced noise so now I tend to lean towards slightly overexposing if I have to.

I've always found Nikons to underexpose slightly.

This is well known and is so to keep the highlights from blowing out.

AS for image settings, I leave them on Normal. All saturation levels, sharpening etc is done on the RAW converter.

I have to go with hacker on this. Slihtly edging the exposure toward being too bright will provide a nice image all round when post processing them.

Everything I shoot now is on manual/spot metering for the above reason.

King.

Interesting stuff.

I under expose by 2/3 of a stop normally - maybe I have a wildcard D200 as my D50 always underexposed by 1/3 stop!. I might try the other way around... i just thought I would burn the highlights out if I over exposed by the numbers you guys are discussing.

Cheers,

Bob

Normally have my D50 set to +0.5EV, always find in most situations it will under-expose

On both the D200 and the D70 I have everything set to normal and deal with it later. Strangely, the D200 has a yen to over expose a tad when used in A or S, but as I have taken to doing almost every shot manually these days, its not a problem. On the 70, I too have it set +0.3 too.

for landscape......

color mode 1
saturation moderate
low contrast
med high sharpening
white balance auto-3

Those are the settings I tend to use in NX unless I want to create a special effect. I find that because of the low saturation, contrast etc its a lot less likely to clip either end of the exposure so there is better lattitude for processing afterwards. The WB is set to -3 to try and stop the red channel blowing so much as I shoot a lot of sunset/sunrise images and it's always the trickiest part to control. Always in RAW too so I can change any of these settings easily in NX afterwards

Work.....

Have to shoot jpegs so.....

low contrast
high saturation
high sharpening
adobe colour space
colour mode 3

Then I get nice sharp punchy shots with saturated colours but they still have space for post capture work if necessary. If it wasn't for the fact that I can have 300+ images to sort through at the end of every day I'd shoot raw for this too.

Oh, and somebody else works over our images :)
