Another question on my productive first day!

After a month of heavy use in France this summer the eyelet on my D200 that supports the strap keyring thingy (technical term) wore through. I managed to catch my camera but it needs repairing ASAP.

After googling it is apparently pinned so the case has to be opened to replace it.

Should I go to a shop or send it straight to Nikon? Does anyone have experience of this? It seems you send it, then they give you a quote, which worries me somewhat!

Might be cheaper to buy a strap that you screw into the tripod bush (if you're not much of a tripod user).

ETA: This is a Sun-Sniper Steel anti-theft jobbie, about 40 quid.

I will look into that. Never seen one before!

Reccommend you have a look at the Black Rapid RS-7. It uses the tripod bush and can be used with tripod quick release plates as well. I did not like the Nikon neck strap because I thought the mountings on the camera body looked weak. I have used a BR RS-7 with my D200 including battery pack and a long telephoto lens for 2 years and would not consider going back now. An added benefit is the way in which you can slide the camera from carrying position to taking position in an instant.

Thanks all. Will try one of these rather than send off my precious camera. I guess if I'd known about these a while back then I wouldn't have a broken eyelet. It also proves that the eyelets can go. I nearly had all my kit smashed on the streets of Mont St Michel!

Ordered a strap at last. Thanks for all the advice. Should save me a lot of time and money. Plus I get to keep the camera with me.
