Good evening I'm thinking of venturing into studio photography and as it's a mine field out there I was wondering if anybody has used this kit or know of a studio kit they would recommend

Welcome to TP :)

Elinchrom D-Lites are very good. There's a review of the D-Lite 2/4 kit in the next edition of Digital SLR Photography magazine (March-dated edition) along with six other similar kits. Should be out in the next week or two.

It's almost like he's psychic.

I've recently purchased this kit but the IT version for a small home studio and find it very easy to use with good results. Plenty of power with the 4 and not needed anywhere near that output as yet. I would reccomend looking for the IT version as with this Intelligent Triggering you can adjust individual fash outputs remotely without leaving your camera which is very useful in a somewhat cramped home studio. I also went for the softbox version as opposed to the umbrella kit as I already have a few umbrellas if I need to use them.

The IT version only offers radio triggering, the RX version brings radio power adjustment.

Personally if I were buying second hand I'd look for the portalite softboxes to be included as they're effectively free but if buying new I'd probably save the money and use it on a better quality separate softbox.

Sorry you are right I just checked mine and they are RX version (thought they were IT) my apologies.

Thanks I have managed to bag myself a second hand unit but it is virtually new still in warranty, next question is what colour background should I start off with

John,

I am also just learning about OCF/Lighting so am a beginner, with regards to background, the mid grey ones are good as they can be made black or white with the correct lighting.
