You've probably seen this on the news, just across the river from me. Unfortunately I was asleep at the time. :bang:

Thought you may find it of interest...I know most of us down here have a small photo collection, lets hope their not going to be the last.

BBC news link.

Luckily the top half of the ship is away for restoration...lets hope they can save her.

Suspected arson. :shake:

bummer..

I'll be honest, I had no idea what the Cutty Sark was until I heard the news this morning.

Fascinating stuff. Shame about the fire though....Hopefully it can be restored.

If you visit the BBC's website, they have footage from a mobile phone, and boy does it look like it went up big time - yes, I know its a wooden boat!

I havent had chance to see news reports yet, but as I still hadn't managed to get over there on my travels discovering my adopted city, I really do hope they manage to salvage it.

I'm hoping this is going to turn out not to be as bad as it looks. She was in the process of being restored, (according to BBC this morning), and so the top half of the ship had been removed. As she has a cast iron steel hull, it's possible she could be fully restored. I hope so, as she was a lovely ship. I have been on her many times over the years.

Thats quite lucky that the top half had been removed. I've also seen her a few times in the Tall Ships race. One of my favourite ships.

Are you sure you're talking about the same ship? According to their website she's been in dry dock since her first restoration was completed in 1957.

I've been aboard several times myself, as a child with my parents and again several times since with my own sons.

Was certainly a shock to see on the news this morning. Wierd thing is I was watching a film on BBC last night called GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) about a group of teenagers leaving school and forming a band. They attended a party held on the Cutty Sark.
Seems strange to things like this happening, about 2 weeks ago an old house Orsett Hall (Orsett Essex) burnt down, had to be several hundred years old, sadly just a pile of rubble now. Used to drive past it alot on Sunday drives as a child with my parents and had several meals in there too as it was a restaraunt and wedding venue.

According to the beeb just now, it’s lost the upper and slightly lower visitor deck, but that left most of the original structure intact ... so it’s not so bad apparently. :( :cuckoo:

Yeah that was a fab building, real shame its gone ... don't even go their with the :suspect: thing. We’re just paranoid ...hopefully. :(

Oh right. Wonder what I've seen then :D Tall ship with black and white patches on the hull.

I think that was Cap'n Jack and the Black Pearl. Arrrrrrrr!

If this is arson, it just proves how much this country is producing a generation of scum.

I thought Chris Moyles on R1 was being an arse with his comments.

It is an important part of Englands heritage and although I'm not in tears, it does upset me if this is arson.

I wish I knew which country to move to which is better than this hole we call England.

Rant over!
Carl.

the Cutty Sark has special memories for me...over the years, most times I have visited London, usually the Tate Modern, I have somehow ended up walking past the Cutty Sark and its such a beautiful part of our history...it better not be arson but you can't help but think it is...it's just a bit sad really...

Such sad news - I have fond memories from my childhood of being taken there by my nan - a beautiful ship indeed and like others on here the idea of it being arson just defeats me - why would anyone do something like that?
If anyone had pics taken on visits to the ship or the area then I've started a thread over on sharing. Pop them in there and let's let Marcel see what he's missed out on!

Interesting the comments about Orsett Hall too - friends of ours got married there last summer. I normally work about five minutes along the road from it but I'm based elsewhere at the moment so thankfuly missed all the traffic chaos caused by its demise the other week.
