Sounds interesting but avoid it, here's why:
You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, perpetual, royalty-free licence to publish or otherwise use the Material in any way, for any purpose and at any time we want;
Selected photographs and video Material will be published at the discretion of the editor and you will not be paid, even if your submission(s) is (are) published;

nice. barge and pole.

just avoid.

amused by some of the responses on AP

This seems to be pretty much what all comps now have now in their T's & C's. It's just so they can print the winning image in their literature/stores and do so in overseas branches as they see fit.

This definitely seems to be the case...

If I was to take a cynical view I would think that they are simply launching competitions in order to gather lots of good quality, free publicity material ;)

one could quite easily suspect this is the case for many competitions. especially the 'prize' is rather less than wonderful.

But it shouldn't be.
Decent T&C's will state that it can be used in any way they see fit etc etc, but only in connection with the competition.

The above T&C's basically give them license to sell all the entries as they see fit, use them as their own stock image library for anything too.

That's what stinks about it.

Sure, if they want carte blanche to use it for promotion of the competition etc, then say so, but to say "You enter and we own it...." is wrong.

I agree with you (sorry for the thread revival, I've been away ;)). I think it's just a lazy way out but it's getting more and more common.

I'd be very suprised if they used winning images to directly promote products and services. I just think in this age of litigation madness, compliance departments want to make sure they are squeaky clean.

it's an easy way for the company to get a top class image and use it for free. At the same time generating some publicity while the competition is running.

still wouldn't trust them...if their original motive was to assume rights I'd still not be happy entering even with a change in the rules...

The rules have now changed according to AP, the pictures will now only be used in conjuction with the competition as they have had loads of letters etc
