ctrl click layer in photoshop on mac

Ok, so I keep seeing tutorials where a step involves holding control and clicking a layer then all the pixels in that layer are selected. This is fine on windows, but on a mac CTRL click is a right click - how do I disable this or is there an alternate way to achieving this effect,

it's driving me mad!

Ctrl on Windows is Cmd on Mac, not Ctrl

But that doesn't do it either, that just allows me to select more than one layer. I want to do the pixel selection
