Whilst experimenting around with an image (which from my camera is usually saved as 16 bit) I discovered that the Filter Gallery was not available in CS6 to me.

However when downsizing to 8 bit, it became available.

Can someone explain the merits of both 16 and 8 bit images and which is more preferable and why are filters only available in the filter gallery for CS6 for the 8 bit images.

Whilst many people advocate that you cannot tell the difference between a 16 bit image and an 8 bit image visually, the 16 bit image gives a lot more levels of tone especially if you edit using levels or curves adjustments.
Personally I edit in 16 bit mode and then convert to 8 bit if i need to use a filter that is not available in 16 bit. I will save the original RAW and also a finished image as a 16 or 8 bit Tiff.
If you really want to read up on this then martin Evenings CS6 for Photographers goes into this in some detail and is worth buying anyway imo.
It is his method I have adopted

Not all features support 16 bit editing. They need converted to 8 bit images.
