my friend has said i can use his photoshop he said its cs5

but when im there he is at work so i cant get any help from him

but what i want to know is if i got a pic of me kids how do i make the black ground b&w and have kids in colour ( kids are example i would like to try diferent things also )

any help is as always much appreciated

Simplest, but not necessarily best method: duplicate the background layer. Make the top layer b/w. Use the eraser tool to erase the b/w to show the color bit underneath. If you don't know about layers, its a nice upwardly sloped learning curve!

excellent works a treat

just wandering though when i go over the parts i want in colour it is very faint so i have to go over it a few times before i get the true colour, is there away to get it that colour straight away

any chance u could tell me where to find opacity, it was the hardness i was changing but i cant find the opacity anywhere

even so i love this way of doing it and would like to say thanks again

im having great fun lol
 
Select the eraser, at the top left, just above your image tab, you have the box to adjust brush size etc, to the right of that there is a mode tab, then opacity, set that to 100%, just remember it will stay at 100% for that tool until you change it.

Matty, do it the way of photodiva's second suggestion. That way if you make mistakes you can paint back the grey areas. Undo doesnt work when you want to change something 30 actions ago.

Also dont set the opacity to 100%, it will make edges look un-natural, and gives you no margin for error. You want to 'paint' things in with numerous strokes with a soft brush and low opacity (in this case around 25%).

I just tested to make sure and it makes a world of difference.

Also use a layer mask and switch between black and white brushes, if you slip and go over a part that you don't want in black & white then you can switch the brush back to go back over it. Using an eraser is bad practice as there is no way to get it back apart from in the history.

And by default you only have 20 history states, as suggested a layer mask is the way to go.
