Does anyone know where I am going wrong with my selection for content aware fill?

You can see my selection in this photo but it is being filled with random parts of the photo (eg you can see a bit of the tail light in the fill).

I have tried a smaller selection of half of the red post and about the same sized area of the grass and fence to the left of that, but the results are the same.

I have tried the spot healing tool and clone stamping but have similar problems.

Apart from making too big a selection, you're not doing anything wrong, but Photoshop doesn't know what you want to include, or exclude from the fill source, so it takes a sample of everything and makes it's fill from there.

If you take smaller "bites" of the area you want to fill, and go bit by bit you'll get better results.

Content aware fill is not a miracle worker, it does fail sometimes. I suspect it can't find enough data to fill the area with. You do need to give it something to work with, here I think it really doesn't have enough to do a good job.

I suspect the clone tool would do a better job here
