CS4 - Saving text layers?

I have my background layer and I've added a signature on a text layer, whenever I save the file, the layers become merged together.

Is it possible to save the file where the layers are still seperate when I come to open the file again? I'd like to be able to edit the text layer if at all possible.

You can, but not as a jpeg. Savew as a .PSD file and your layers will reman intact

Or a tiff file, that also retains the layers
