Hello everyone,

I have been trying to install Photoshop CS3/CS4 on my Mac OS X, but everytime I try, it end up saying, ''This software cannot be installed because the file system of the OS volume is not supported. The OS Volume should be local, writable, and should have a non case-sensitive file system'':bang:

Can anyone help??

Thanks in advance

PS. I not quite sure if its the right forum to talk about this, if not, I ask for apology.

What version of OS X are you running and what is the model of your Mac?

I am using Mac OS X 10.5.7 on the new MacBook (Alluminium One: 2.0 Ghz)

I have tried installing CS2 as well, but at the end of all installations, one msg box appears saying, some files missing and cannot install software!!

One more thing, just to let you know, I have tried all the TRY OUT versions of CS2, CS3 and CS4

Help me out please

I am sure cowasaki will pop along soon as he is the resident Mac expert.....

But for now click here and read this. It looks like the format of your hard drive is wrong and the way to fix it is a nightmare, you have to wipe it and start again so not good news im afraid but fixable

Cheers Paul that was very helpful. I'll give it a try :coat: ... so wish me luck

Thanks again

I suspect that you have installed a demo version of CS4 and then uninstalled it? I think that there are traces on your system that are affecting the new installation and Adobe have a script on their site that will tidy it up for you. Try a search for it, if you are not successful, let me know and I'll have a look for it.

Exactly the same issue happened to me.

I have done a bit more looking on this one and it does appear to be an issue with the format of your drive.

Have you re-installed or altered your hard drive at all recently and changed the format to be case sensitive?

Do you have a separate drive that you can use to back up all your data so that you can reinstall and format the drive?

Don't want to sound of, but is it a hooky copy? Have had this problem before with copies. If it ain't then I'd suggest looking to uninstall any demos first. Do a search in finder for any photoshop files and ditch them manually if you can't uninstall.

Okay - next question - where are you trying to install the software; onto the internal disk or an external drive? If external, it is directly attached (USB / FIREWIRE) or a network drive?

What is the format of the disk you are trying to install to?

If it's any help ( probably not) but I've a MacBook Pro with 10.5.7 and running CS4 no problems. CS4 was installed under 10.5.5 but I don't think that should be a problem. Also CS4 initially installed via 30 day trial whilst awaiting Mac License, so it's possibly similar to you own set up

Try getting a copy of Appdelete. and get it uninstall all the Photoshop files. This should clean up any residual Photoshop fragments that may be around. I would then download another copy of CS4 and see if that loads.

If all else fails Adobe support, or Adobe User to User forums

I have never used any adobe softwares apart from Lightroom 2 before this. I have even uninstalled Lightroom now!! But no luck :bonk:

I have been trying to install CS4 but everytime I started, it stopped and kept saying ''This software cannot be installed because the file system of the OS volume is not supported. The OS Volume should be local, writable, and should have a non case-sensitive file system'' so literally its was never installed.

It's the internal one and the format is Case-sensitive Journaled.

Tried this to uninstall all the photoshop software, still not working :shake:

Yes Paul, I think its the format of the drive. I have not re-installed or altered my HD yet after I bought this in April. I think it's the first set up which went wrong, I dont know what I have done, cant even remember any options to go for case-sensitive or not. But my brother has the same configured Macbook which is not a case sensitive one (MAC OS EXTENDED JOURNALED) and I tried CS4 there, that was working. So I am planning to back up everything and re-format the HD now. :gag:

I dont have any other HDs to back up, so thinking of COPYING all the data (could be around 60GB) to my HP Laptop via network sharing!
Any other better ideas? :help:

One more thing, can anyone remember when to select Case-sensitive or Journaled formation for Hard disk while re-installing?

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll probably re-format this HD tomorrow  so by that time any other better ideas?? I'll certainly appreciate that.

Thanks once again

I do not think that it is the format of the drive - as previous - EXACTLY the same issue happened to me. 'Something' was interfering with the install and the Adobe script sorted it out - if you have just purchased CS4 give them a call. I was sorted in minutes.

On my Macbook Pro, the internal disk is setup as 'MAC OS Extended (journaled)', and CS4 is fine, so I think you are on the right lines now.

Surely this is this issue, it is asking for a non case sensitive format, and yours is case sensitive!

had a look online and found it appearrs the only way to resolve this is to backup any data and reformat with the correct file system

Chris, can you remember what you did after you contacted them? I might give that a try as you know, re-installing is such a nightmare!!

The versions I've tried to install, all are try out versions. I did contact them, but all they are saying to uninstall all the CS softwares, dowlaoding the programme from website and install again. After these futile attempts, I dint contacted them, anymore.

I have also checked out some of the forums and they say I need to change my Hard Disk format.

I have just searched Adobe and cannot find the fix - just ring them - the guy I spoke to knew what the issue was straight off. I downloaded the fix and installation then went to plan.

Chris

Try the Adobe user to user forums. Loads of helpful people on there. Go to the Photoshop one post your problem. I'm sure someone there will know about the app Chris is talking about. I've used the Lightroom one a couple of times and found it very helpful

I'd recommend calling Adobe. I'm pretty sure they can help.

I'm intrigued as to why it was case sensitive in the first place. Who set it up for you?

Do you have an external drive with enough space for a full backup? Easiest way to do it would be to configure time machine to back up everything, then format the internal drive and perform a restore from your time machine backup (all done from the 10.5 install DVD). Can be time consuming though.

BTW, if it's not clear - that IS the issue. CS4 cannot be installed to a case sensitive file system.

Thnx guys for all your feedbacks, I have re-formatted my HD to Journaled from Case-sensitive. And now everything is ok. :woot:

By the way, I did call Adobe they kept trying step by step installation but dint work out! Finally they told me to change my File system to journaled!! As they were having loads of complaints regarding this issue and as soon as the formation was changed everything worked!!

So anyone using Case-sensitive :nono: ?? Think about switching to Journaled ...

Thanks once again for all your helps and guidance speacially, BIG THANKS TO Paulmack you've been telling me this from the very first time!!

Cheers

I read the first post and saw "case sensitive" and thought DOH! that'll be the problem :) Then you answered your own question later on !! The case sensitive format is a throw back from unix which is basically case sensitive if you use it on a Mac it can cause all manner of problems. It should come with a warning !

If it's a brand new ( I assume) MacBook should it not just have a conventional journaled drive. Mine did. How has it become case sensitive unless it was re formated for some reason?

They are all formatted as journalled. Apple never use case sensitive, it must have been reformatted.

I would have thought that too but I looked at a few forums and there does appear to be quite a few people out there having the same problem with machines that are new out of the box.... Reading the forums the people involved didnt seem all that knowledgeable about carrying out a format so wondering if they are indeed being shipped in this format?

Maybe they have a rogue ghost image that someone is using for a bit of fun, a disgruntled employee maybe?

Guys you are right!! Actually I did reformat it on the very first day as I made mistakes regarding the ADMIN name of my system ... But honestly, I dint have a single idea about these case-sensitive thing! Rather I was so excitted about my new Macbook, I hardly cared about that thing!!

One more thing I was actually thinking that case sensitive thing would be better! But ...

Anyways thanks again guys ... Paulmack, really appreciate this mate!!
