CS2 Feathering problem

At the moment if I try and feather a selection in CS2 it feathers all sides, including the canvas edges, which is obviously rather annoying. I'm sure it didn't used to do this (and this months practical photography says CS2 doesn't:shrug:) so is there some setting that I pressed accidently?

I think I'm getting this in CS3 too. Is it a setting somewhere?
 
According to PP for CS3 you need to select the area and go to Select>Refine Edges and do it there. This doesn't work on CS2 however unfortunately.:(
