I'm considering taking the plunge and buying myself a copy of CS2.

Warehouse Express have it for £480.

Does anyone know anywhere cheaper?

You could pick up a copy of Photoshop 6 from ebay (e.g. here) and purchase a CS2 upgarde for £150 odd. Worked fine for my copy of CS :)

Best thing to do Is to try and get hold of an old copy of 6 or 7 with the license key, and then get it as an upgrade. I'm sure there will be copies on fleabay somewhere.

There are other ways too............

oh well, two great minds think alike!

...well I do happen to be in possession of (and am currently using) a copy of PS7 from work, the idea of upgrading that has crossed my mind!

If you need to use it professionally then yes, you should buy it.

If you're using it at home then there's no point. I'm not condoning piracy either, just stating the massive gap between theory and practice on the matter.

When you read about people being done for software piracy it's the people pirating huge quantities (usually in Asia) that get caught. If anyone can find me a single instance/story/link where a private individual in England has been prosecuted for using cracked software I'll eat my hat. The money software companies make from private users is peanuts compared to business use. That's where they concentrate their efforts.

I'll understand if any mods want to remove this post but I haven't linked to anywhere offering illegal goods, nor have I told DavidUK how to find such places. I've just stated my personal opinion on the matter.

So in your view, does the selling of one photo via image library count as using it professionally?

I think you have to use your commonsense and conscience with these things, if its something you are using on a regular basis then you should really be properly licensed. This applies especially when you are publishing to the web on a routine basis.

I'd snap up £480 for my car right now! ;)

..I understand completely, and confess I would be a lot happier if I had a legal copy. I could quite easily find a hooky copy on the internet somewhere, lets face it it's not that hard, but I'd always have that nagging voice in my head.

It is an impressive package, but also at an impressive price. I've often wondered if Photoshop Elements would suffice, as the price difference is considerable... but the vast majority of books and articles you see all refer to Photshop, not Elements.

My current copy is one I found lying around at work, we have a tendency to buy ten copies or so (just for an example) and only use a few, and the others just end up gathering dust in a cupboard.

Don't forget that there is always Pain Shop Pro which although functions differently, it will do almost everything that Photoshop will do at a fraction of the price. I understand the isses with article and tutorials always being written for PS rather than Elements but here again, PSP has many helpful and detailed tutorials and guides posted around the web.

I have to agree that the cost at full retail of CS is a lot more than most can or are willing to spend. Businesses have large pockets though and that is still Adobes largest market.
