Out for a walk today on a canal when I witnessed a crow using its beak take a fish, did not realise they done that, is that normal behaviour

Unfortuarly no photo it was a family day out, we were feeding ducks, crow and gulls were squabling thinking that was about to happen again, the Crow just swooped down and pulled fish out of the water with its beak, we were all amazed

Seen one attack, kill and carry off a collared dove, that came as a bit of a surprise to me too

Blimey, nature certainly keeps surprising us

Not sure which taught the other but I've seen gulls and corvids dropping mussels onto the pavement on Exmouth sea front to get at the morsels within. The crow family are good learners and (as pointed out) very opportunistic. Might be worth keeping an eye on that spot to see if the crow is a repeat customer at the fishing spot...

This one had the stick in its grasp when it landed and when it took off, dont know what it used it for, this was on the sea shore

Watched this one hopping around the mud mounds down on the coast cocking his head to listen and then in with the beak to pull out young lobsters

Crows are suppose to be the smartest birds aren't they? Have a look at this.

Saw some Corvids `fishing` on a tv prog a while ago.
They were picking up bits of bread, that had been thrown down by folk feeding the birds, then flying to a nearby pond then dropping the bread in the water to attract small fish, which they then caught!
They'd obviously worked out it was better to risk a bit of bread for a healthier meal, but it shows real intelligence & reasoning.

We were feeding ducks bread and the fish were also feeding on it, clever birds

Without the explanation first, I reckon the crow worked it out before I did!
