Hi All.

Just a quick question on cropping then printing.

I ave a Canon 500D which as you will all know has a sensor crop factor of 1.6x.

When I take picture, work on them etc then try and crop (on Elements 9) I want to try and crop to a size that I can simply print (when I go to a print shop or order prints online). I am aware that the sensor on the 500D is a 3:2 ratio (so i presume any size at that ratio such as 6x4) is fine.

When I choose 6x4 thjough it crops out a large proportion of the image.

I guess what I want to know is how do I crop in Elements or even better simply print the whole image without having to get rid of lots of it.

Hmm, not sure if that all makes sense but please let me know any thoughts/advice.

Cheers

Hi. I think the issue of the crop factor of the sensor is a red herring. Don't worry about that. I don't use Elements, but I assume that you can customize the crop tool to specific dimensions (pixels, inches, cm). Then draw your crop marquee and see what is included/left out of your original image. Alternatively, create a new blank canvas to the size you want and then drag/copy your image onto that and see how it fits.

Daft question, you have set the units for the crop in inches not something else.?

First ignore the 1.6 crop factor on the lens, that has noting to do with cropping in photoshop.
Are you trying to crop a part of the original image or do you want the whole thing to end up 6x4?

I'd like to either (a) print the whole image as a 6x4 (or other size in a 3:2 ratio) or make changes, crop, then do the same (ie print it off) although I do realise that if I crop initially the dimensions may have changed so there may be an additional part of the image which will require cropped before printing etc.

Cheers

Hi, in elements it simply says "6x4" so I havent rally set it to anything. I should point out this is in the guided edit of the picture screen (new for Elements 9 I believe).

May be stating the obvious here but just in case...

When you select your 6"x4" crop size you are aware that you can drag the rectangular box that appears to fit more or less of your image into it? It will maintain the 6x4 ratio but allow you to resize up or down. Hope that makes sense.

Thanks Keith.

So, say I wanted to print at 12x8 would the 6x4 still work as the ratio remains at 3:2? If so I presume I just select 6x4 then when it comes to prdering the print select the larger 12x8 knowing that the whole image will be included as the ratio is the same?

If you just want the whole image 6x4 why not use image size instaed? just remember to save as so as not to save over the full size original (or work on a copy of the image)

Thanks Keith.

Yep.

Thats pretty much correct I reckon.
