I know these will sound like simple questions but I can't get my head around a way to do it.

Firstly, I have a picture on the computer which I need to reshape to fit a 6x4 frame. However, it's already been cropped and so it's lose the aspect ratio - how can I do this?

Also, I have some scanned pictures and I need to divide them into two- how do I go about this?

Thanks for the help!

What editing software do you have available to you?

For you second question it'll probably be best to take the original file and crop off one section then do a SAVE AS then open the original file then crop the other portion off then do a SAVE AS again so you end up with 2 seperate files and the original.

Sorry, I omitted that part. That's the problem - PS won't run on this PC so I have Lightroom or just the bundled PC applications. If I wait a week, I can access PS CS3 but I still don't think I'd know how to do it even then.

Lightroom is good for cropping to a specific ratio (6x4).

Select the photo then go to the devop tab. Click on the crop icon on the right and then click on the aspect ratio (should say 'original') then choose the 6x4 ratio.

Your picture should then have a box over it which is in the correct proportions. You can move the box and/or photo to where looks best then hit the enter key and lightroom will chop your picture in the correct dimensions.

sorry I'm a bit vague describing the icons but am at work and can't remember the exact positions of them :)

Brilliant advice, thank you very much. I assumed Lightroom must have such a function - very helpful post of you indeed!

That's the way I do it too in Lightroom.

I find it helpful before changing the aspect to create a snapshot, so that no matter how you change the crop you can always get back to how you started. I also create a snapshot for each aspect ratio I export at, so I can always get back to the same image.
