Currently using CS3 quite happily, but have stumbled upon a situation that I can't find the answer for with regard to cropping.

How do you make a crop to a specific size at 100%?

Let me expand. I want to crop a block measuring 300x200 pixels from an image. Entering these figures in the size boxes of the crop tool results in a crop of the right dimensions, but the image is being resized to meet these figures if the original selection is larger or smaller than required. What I want to do is restrict the crop selection process once the selected area reaches the 300x200 limit I am looking for.

Reading PS help, it says if the resolution box is left blank, the crop will not be resized, but I am not finding this to be the case.

Any ideas?

Zoom into your image till it reads 100%. Select the rectangular marquee and enter the size as 300px x 200px - there's a drop down box hat i think says Normal; ratio and size (might be something else but should make sense when you see it) - you want size. Click on the image and the selection will appear. Move the selection to suit and go to image>crop

Done.

Thanks for that EOS. And there was me thinking you should be able to do that with the crop tool rather than the marquee tool!

I also found that you don't need to be zoomed in at 100% as you suggest. As you zoom in and out, the size of the marqee selection changes as appropriate.

Yes you are right. Set the size and the zoom preview doesn't matter! Woops - I use 100% because you can see better for a small crop like that.

The crop tool resizes as you say.

Glad I could help.
