Just a heads up on a scam I encountered today.
I got a call on my mobile saying it was the National Crime Agency and my N I number had been used for illegal activity and would be blocked unless I replied to the call by pressing 1.
The phone number was 07982 243190.

I get one of these calls on average once a week. I would love to know what 'blocking' a National Insurance number would achieve, even if the call was genuine?

I’ve had them before too.

That's a new one on me - thanks for the warning

A genuine caller will ask for you by name.
Also a genuine caller will leave a voicemail if you don't answer.

The NCA have their 'fraudulent activity' reporting info

I've had that call many times.
It's a shame they targeted someone who has worked with NCA...

The NCA may be helpless to act on such off shore(?) fraudsters......but did you report it?

of course. NCA has operatives in many countries too, worldwide. Bluddy brave public servants doing dangerous jobs, for inadequate reward.

Had similar, one is HMRC and some illegal activity. If bodies like that do have something to say they will do it by mail.

I've noticed the scammers are also able to make it look like it's a local number calling...

Your NI number is used for benefits and tax purposes, and not much else. The American equivalent Social Security Number has experienced scope creep, and in now a de-facto universal ID number, required for banking, credit, employment, and a whole host of other stuff. Having your SSI blocked or compromised is a major catastrophe for a US citizen, and the scammers make the mistake of assuming the threat of a blocked NIN will induce the same level of panic in a Brit.

I have one or two of these per week. I always block the number but they use a different one every time.
I don't answer any call unless I know who is calling.
A genuine caller leaves a message if I don't answer.

I had one on Monday telling me there is an arrest warrant out for fraud using my NI number,
No I didn't press and button, just blocked the number and reported it as a scam

If the caller is not in my contact list I don't answer the phone and if it's someone important they can leave a message.
Scammers are even spoofing the system so it comes up as a private number which makes you think it's important like your doctor etc.
I've had a couple of calls that have been picked up and recorded and they were an automated message that got deleted.
Life's too short to deal with idiots, just like the scam emails I receive on a daily basis written with the brain of a 4 year old that get deleted without reading them.
I totally understand why some vunerable people get caught out but there is no real excuse for others unless they really are stupid.

If the caller is not in my contact list I don't answer the phone and if it's someone important they can leave a message.
That is exactly what I do.

I'm not getting that £150,000 from Nigeria am I? :wideyed:
Are you still waiting too?
Not looking promising is it?

:D

I've got this amazing opportunity to buy a bridge in New York. It's in a place called Brooklyn... :tumbleweed:
