Well, when we were in Australia recently the father in law of one of my friends was very critical of the Australian cricket captain and his values - he didn’t care about his centuries but his approach. Turns out he was right. I know there have been issues with others including on the England team. I am bemused that after he said that it wasn’t enough for him to have to step down, he has now been banned for just 1 match. This seems really to validate pre meditated cheating with a slap on the wrist. Hmm...
 
That's incredible, isn't it. How does this portray the sport, and the body that run it, in any decent light at all. He openly admitted that they all discussed that they were going to do the deed, in the dressing room. It was all premeditated and the only reason it's in our faces now is that the cameras picked up on it happening. I'm sure the bowler concerned, is going to get hung out to dry, and rightly so, but one game is pathetic.

He and the bowler, should be banned from all forms of cricket for a minimum of 6 months imo
 
I seem to recall Michael Atherton being done for ball tampering years ago. I don't remember how he was penalised at the time.
Seems in most sports, all cheating will get you now is a mild censure.
 
I do believe there was an element of criminality in Australia’s history?.. I may be wrong though

He had picked up dirt from the cricket pitch and put it in his pocket to use. I believe it's permitted to use it if you pick it up and use it immediately but putting it in his pocket to use when needed was not.

Indeed, but camera footage showed him applying it from his pocket.
A sesrchreturns that he was fined GBP 2k.
 
What amazed me was them saying it was a leadership decision to do it. If they'd just left it to the umpires to sort out and not said anything it still wouldn't have looked good but better than where they stand now.

See Mike Atherton has said that this premeditated ball tampering is different from his situation. Don't really think that you've got the moral high ground on this point Mike.

Seems rife in all walks of life this old 'cheating to gain advantage' attitude. It's a shame that they feel the need to do it - like they're already world class but they still want more.

Indeed, look at all the people buying camera equipment from the far east to try to avoid paying VAT.
 
Cheating has gone on since the dawn of time - Why are people surprised it happens. Of course there are various types of cheating. Bringing down a player deliberately (football) is cheating but its also known as 'taking one for the team'. Diving however is frowned upon and wrong! In this day and age with tests and TV, it seems stupid to cheat by taking drugs or using sandpaper on a ball. I guess that human nature thing of thinking we will never be caught comes into play.

Unless you are Russian and then you get banned despite the fact that you have not been caught cheating.

As an ex sportsperson, who competed against so called "elite sportspersons" I find this incredibly hypocritical.
 
Well, it looks like it is a big deal in Australia; a one year suspension is said to be on the cards. Loss of captaincy. Maybe inside their ‘win at all costs’ bubble helped them think that doing this was ok. The action may not be swift but I think this demonstrates at least that cricket hasn’t quite reached football’s level of indifference to all the divers, aggressive behaviour to refs etc etc.
 
Well, I have been pondering the sanctions that have come in. At first, I thought that this was right; kicked off the team and suspensions. Then I pondered what happens to drugs cheats. They get to come back and win medals. The culture of the team was vile but the new captain has already instigated handshakes at the start of the game. Perhaps, when they have served their time, a non leadership role might be possible. The problem was not with their cricketing skills.... Perhaps we should see some shades of grey in this.... I read that the coach is going to step down; I couldn’t see how he could keep going with the negativity that was permitted to flourish under his leadership and the fact that he didn’t know what they were planning.... thoughts?
 
He didn't know what was going on? He seemed to know as soon as he saw the pictures and was on the radio to tell the players they'd been rumbled fast enough!
 
Surely only Cheating makes Cricket interesting, otherwise---------------!!:banghead:
