Creative Cloud "catalogue too new to open etc"

I signed up for creative cloud and after having used it a few days find it very slow loading and impossible to view videos.
I want to go back to LR 5.4 but I cant open the catalogue from creative cloud and get the message that the file is too new.
What can I do I really dont want to be stuck with creative cloud but seem to have dug a hole for myself.
I've had quite a long absence from LR so am a bit brain dead about my options.
 
You'll have to load a backup catalog. They can not be downgraded.

Maybe you want to try and figure out why things are so slow. CC works fine for me here and always has done and I've not heard of any speed issues with CC.

I'd start with disabling GPU acceleration and see if that helps.
