Creating two layers from the same selection?

Hello peeps,

I have a question for any Photoshop gurus that may happen to frequent these parts...

When I'm editing portrait shots I sometimes create a quick selection around the subject, then invert it and create a new layer via copy, leaving me with a layer of everything but the subject, so I can add a curves adjustment layer linked to that selection and brighten it (washing it out a bit so that the subject stands out).

What I want to be able to do is to go back to the selection I made (around the subject) and "un-invert" it, leaving me with just the subjects selected, so I can then create another layer and work on that separately from the blown-out background layer I just created, i.e. I want to be able to work on the subject and the background as two separate layers, without having to go back and re-select the subject again using a quick mask.

So, if that makes any sense whatsoever, and if anyone knows a quick and easy way to do this, please chip in!

Feel free to mock me and call me names, as I'm sure there is an easy way to do this, but I'm buggered if I can work it out.

Make your original selection into an additional channel and then you can return to use it as a selection later.

Or you could make your selection into a mask and command or control click on the mask in the layers panel to make that into the selection.. :)

This should work providing you have not moved the second layer

Select the new layer and (have the move/lasso/marquee tools selected)
hold down Ctrl and with the mouse click on the icon of the layer
you should get marching ants
then select the layer you want to work on (make sure you have the correct tool selected when you go to work on it)

I do this quite a bit

I wanted to know this too cheers guys

if our taking a selection of the subject why invert it just copy the subject to a new layer and use the other layer to make your adjustments to the background then use your suject copy to edit your subject

CTRL click on the layer mask on the curvses ajustment layer, tha'll reselect it , then CTRL+shift+I to invert it back.
