Sounds like fun and something to help challenge my photography.

Will be spending most of this week in a hotel so first week shouldn't be too hard...

Ok, here we go with week 1 - accommodation.

First time doing this and didn't realise how difficult it might be!

Need to challenge my creativity in future weeks, as don't think I've done a great job with this one.

Taken with the 10-20mm Sigma I bought just before Xmas (from TP) on a Giotto 9361 tripod Santa left me. Venue is the hotel I spent over 150 night at last year and which I expect to spend a few more in 2011!

Hiya Adrian,

Not a bad start to your 52.

I like the lighting and colours your have captured, especially in the brickwork. Although the image would benefit from a straighten and a crop.

It's a pity about the light reflection on the sign which draws the eye. Perhaps taking the shot from a slightly different angle would have avoided that.

Good luck with the rest of the project.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Adrian.

Agree with Dawn on this - The lighting and colours are beautiful - particularly on the brickwork and in the sky. I also really like the splashes of blue throughout it.
I think that on the day there might have been better angles available, but given what you have I'd play around with some different crops to see what that does to the composition - it's the lamppost in the centre of the frame that bothers me the most, but it looks like it would be a fiddly job to clone out.

For future shots, you may find that a circular polarising filter will help cut down unwanted reflections on shiny objects.

Thanks for the comments! I've had another look at it this week and not sure I'd get the shot without the reflection (which is from a lamp post behind where the shot was taken) although might try with a polarising filter.

This is SO much harder than I imagined, but I can't fall after the first week so here the week 2 shot - a New building (or at least it will be in another 6 months!)

Can't say I'm all that please with it given the quality and creativity in other members pictures, but hopefully I'll learn and improve as the year progresses....

Hi Adrian, your week one shot looks like an interesting building and my thoughts on it prety much echo the others on the nice lighting and colours but detracted a little by the large reflection on sign.

Week two again looks like an interesting structure with some nice lines and detailing but looks a bit soft to my eyes, perhaps a further vantage point on a different day would enable you to include a more dramatic backdrop to the building and add some extra space at sides as it seems a bit tight in the frame.

Good luck and looking forward to see what you come up with in the future.

I agree with Tommy. It looks a bit soft to me as well as the framing looking a bit too tight. It certainly fits the theme but it all seems a bit too busy to me with no obvious focal point.

Hi Adrian, a nice start to your 52. Both are right on the themes.
For me, week 1 is more striking and has more of a focus of interest.

Probably not that important, but I find your copyright logo with the grey bar right across the bottom a bit distracting.

Good luck with the rest of your 52.

I agree with patrick week one is the stronger.. maybe if the sky was a bit more dramatic it may have pull it up ..but, you are right, i struggled with this theme myself when I thought initially it would be easy ...never mind onwards and upwards they say :D

It's getting harder! Struggled all week with the "style" theme so headed out today to try and find some inspiration, but I didn't!

Having to go with a fairly tenuous link on the theme with this HDR style effort taken this morning of Blackness Castle on a pretty dull day. The style has help bring out the 10 minutes of blueish sky we had today.

Another week with little time to even thing about the topic or to be inspired!

Just had soup for lunch and an hour later with a few things tried for the very first time we have week 4 - Open(er)

Hi Adrian,

Nice shot & good take on the theme.

I had a similar thought earlier today after beans on toast. But our can opener is a bit tired looking

It's fun trying & always makes you think outside the box a bit, especially when the weather is poop!

Hiya Adrian,

My apologies, but I seem to have missed your weeks 2, 3 & 4. I seem to remember seeing week 2, and recall that it took ages for the image to load on my computer, not sure if it had something to do with me changing broadband supplier at the time, hence why I probably moved on. So I am sorry.

Anyway I'm here now:

Week 2: New building definitely fits the bill. I agree with the comments re being a bit soft and a more dramatic background/sky would have benefited the image. But a good interpretation of the theme.

Week 3: HDR style is something I have only attempted twice before, so sorry I can't offer anything from a technical perspective, however I do like the image. It could do with a bit of punch though, as it looks a tad too washed out (for want of a better expression). Perhaps someone with more knowledge or experience of HDR could offer more advice.

Week 4: Good take on the theme. It looks like you have got the whites right, although the image looks a little soft. Maybe a sharpen could correct that.

Now for week 5, what will you come up with for this week? Look forward to seeing your results.

Good luck.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Some nice shots - but your file sizes are mostly over 1 meg! That's just crazy for web use - they could come down to 200k or so and you wouldn't notice any difference on screen.

Hiya Andrew,

Thanks for stating this in a kind way and second your comment. At first I thought it was my connection, but obviously not.

Adrian, if you resize your images to 800 longest side, you will find that they are easier for us to load.

Actually that reminds me now why I took so long to comment on your images, as I recall it took ages, if at all, for your photos to load.

Not a negative crit on your pics, just some guidance to a smoother running.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Thanks for ALL the feedback! I never really noticed the file size with the connection at home, but have resized and reloaded all the images so hopefully things will open a bit quicker.

I was beginning to think I'd fall at week 5 as I didn't have any time last week and was struggling for inspiration until I was walking about South Shields today.

Came across a sculpture of some metal objects on tables attached to lamposts in the street, which I though was quite original and very hardy

Better late than never...

Hiya Adrian,

Love the colours and DOF .... beautiful photo you have there.

Only crit is a pity you clipped the left-hand side of the table, but otherwise brilliant!.

Cheers

Dawn :)

I don't generally do "clutter" and much prefer "neat and tidy". This is probably the only exception in the house, and some might even say it's reasonable organised!

It's a small Ikea shelve unit in the corner of my home office, cropped to the "clutter" as there was nothing very interesting around it.

Wasn't really happy with the lighting, but didn't have much time to play about with it this week.

Hiya Adrian,

You are far too organised ..... how much do you charge per hour? You could make a fortune de-cluttering my home

Love your image and leaves me with something to aspire to, i.e., neat and tidy :D Which I am working on this weekend, but seem to get more cluttered the more I try to organise :bonk:

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Adrian, just seen your project and a look through, you have done really well, week 5 is excellent and one of my favourites. Well done on the clutter theme, definitely well organised clutter. Look forward to seeing more.

Thanks again for the feedback! Whilst the purpose of this was to get me trying different things with my camera and to improve my overall photography, the feedback really helps and is an added bonus.

Already starting to think about this weeks theme and have taken some shots this morning. Good to be ahead of the game for once ;-)

Given it's Valentine's Day tomorrow, and for once I'd been romantic and bought Mrs Badger some flowers, it seemed too good an opportunity.

I give you, a delicate rose!

delicate.png

Taken against a white background with a 50mm @ f8 and a 430EX with defuser straight at the subject. Was thinking it might look better a little washed out (a bit pinker?) but wasn't sure how to in PS.

Might have another look at it in the week if I get chance, given this is the first one I've manage to post on the 1st day

Hi Adrian, I like it, I'm thinking it might look better with some light reflected to the underside of the flower, it looks a little dark compared with the rest of it, or maybe being a bit more above it so you could avoid the shadow on its underside, well done on getting it done so promptly.

Hiya Adrian,

Another lovely red rose for this theme. Personally I would have done a very tight crop to focus on the delicate nature of the open rose (which would have cut out the withering outer petals). Also I see a red heart shape in the centre of the rose (heart .... being very delicate and easily broken .. which would have added to the theme). a bit of sharpen and very slight light fill I think you would be onto an ace image there.

BTW, I appreciate you wanting to copyright your photos, but find your (c) title at the bottom of the image a bit too overpower and distracting. Especially if you are wanting constructive c&c on your image in this project.

Cheers

Dawn :)

Hi Adrian, that's a striking contrast with that pure White background. I,m not sure that you need to think about changing the colour as the petals say"delicate" regardless of colour and this certainly works well colour-wise. On the same note as Dawn said, a tighter crop to eliminate the withered petals might look good as an alternative shot. All in all though, a great image.

Martin

I like your photo of the rose but am sorry to say it is not in it's first flush :nono: bought at the garage?

I agree a tighter crop and whilst I would doubt lighting the underside would help but I feel some light is needed somewhere else...but I know narthing

Hi Adrian,

What a lovely shot. there were a few niggles i had, the white BG wasnt white as it wasnt directly lit itself and the colours seemed a bit muted to me.

Hope you dont mind but i fancied doing a quick edit.. All i did was tweak the levels and up the contrast. A quick wipe with the dodge tool got the BG reading 255 all over.. I'll obviously remove this if you prefer..

i think the DOF used was perfect.

heres my edit..

Thanks again for the feedback, especially Cris for taking the time to edit and improve the shot. Still have so much to learn!

Really need to try and get on a PS course at some point this year as I really only know how to play around at the minute. Most of the PP is just trial and error!

Still trying to find time for a few edits based on previous comments (the clipped table in Hard can be put back as that was me cropping! and I'd like to try a crop on the rose given this weeks feedback) but working away during the week doesn't help.

Short break to Athens this weekend some I'm hoping next weeks topic is historical or Greek ;-)

Great shot and interpretation on a theme. I love Chris's treatment of it too. I'm a bit torn because the damaged petals are a bit distracting, and upset the clarity of the shot, but on the other hand, they help convey how delicate petals are!
I'm not a big fan of the rose being bang in the centre of the shot, and would prefer a slight rotation of the stem from a corner if it is to remain in the centre, or shift it (the whole flower) in PS left (or right) slightly so its on a third line. Dead space on the opposite side will help i'm sure.

Rgds

I really didn't think I'd be so lucky :D

Chaos (Greek: χάος ; in English pronounced /ˈkeɪ.ɒs/[1])

Ok, so maybe a little tenuous, but a picture taken in Greece (at the Acropolis) and a Greek word...

Another early one, inspired by an earlier theme. Well, that and Mrs B throwing out the Valentine's Day flowers which were well and truly finished

Must have taken over 100 shots, and then played with various crops and styles in Aperture, before eventually deciding on this black & white one.

finish.png

I like the idea for "finish" there, and the link back to the old theme is clever. Hopefully it's just the rose that's finished and not the thoughts behind buying it!

I would like to see it in colour though - does the discolouration add more to the idea of it being finished?
