My biggest bug bare about shooting RAW with my 40D and formally the 400D
is that I couldn't see the thumbnails in windows XP "folders"
OK, ok I know I could have opened them in Zoom browser and the like but couldn't be arsed TBH
I am lazy and like things at my fingertips.
Now there is a solution and all my RAW file thumbnails are sitting alongside my JPEG thumbs for all the world
( well me anyway) to see, and the best thing is its free

The only downside is if you click a thumbnail it will open in your preferred editing software but for me this is not an issue.

The order is important apparently so sit up straight and pay attention :D
1st go to the canon site and download the codex (65Mb zipped)clicky

this is a zipped file so unzip ( I just let it got to the default folder)
then take off your wellies and put them back on again
I mean re-boot

Then go to arcsoft and download ArcSoft RAW Thumbnail Viewer Clicky
and re-boot.

Job done!
Oh and the first person that say's Oh I knew that will get a slap around the chops with a soggy kipper :D
its taken me friggin ages to sort this out

Quote from the canon site
Overview
Canon RAW Codec is a software plug-in that enables the import and display of Canon RAW image files when installed in Windows Vista (including SP1)/Windows XP SP2 and XP SP3.
Windows Imaging Component supported applications (Microsoft Windows Live Photo Gallery etc.) are required

and Arc soft just say "windows" quote

ArcSoft RAW Thumbnail Viewer™ is a free plug-in for Windows that allows you to preview your RAW photos when browsing through your files.

In the “Thumbnails” view of Windows Explorer, RAW files appear as generic icons. With ArcSoft RAW Thumbnail Viewer™, you can now see a thumbnail version of your picture! No more endless searching, just easily locate the photo you want to edit or print. Double-click to launch your favorite photo editor!

Yes, you can use it with Vista and view the Raw files in Windows Explorer. :)

Sorry, can I ask again...does it come in Vista x64? :( Don't think it does..just found an interesting looking link though!

And here it is for x64 users...only a 15 day trial though

Don't know but I thought that it was already supported in 64 bit but I am probably wrong:shrug:

I had this exact same problem with Vista and it constantly bugged me...Only way I found to fix it was to ditch Vista and go back to Mac and I can safely say it is no longer a problem.

So the question must be asked why can Mac OS X view a RAW image straight out the box when Windows can't? Surely you would think Microsoft would have sorted this a long time ago with Canon.

Hi

Its not Vista its Canon, they don't support the 64bit version

Mind you for some daft reason they do support the 64bit verson of Windows 7 which about a year away from going on sale

It should work fine in the 32bit versions of XP & Vista without the need for extra viewing software like ArcSoft.
