Hi Guys,

i'm giving my PC a bit of a revamp.

Whats going to be the better CPU to use for photoshop and other likewise apps

Intel Core 2 Duo (E6850) or Intel Quad Core (Q6700)

Cheers

Andy

No idea but can i buy your RAM and motherboard please lol

Im not sure photoshop makes use of dual processors yet, but spose it would be nice to be able to run photoshop and do other stuff at the same time, my music cuts off when i load photoshop...but then I only got an old P4

CS3 does......

I would have thought the Quad core would be better. having said that, you might be better off saving a bit of money on the CPU and go with a lower end C2D, and splashing out on more ram. With Photoshop, ram really is king.:)

i've just ordered some 2X 1GB OCZ DDR2 PC9200 ram:)

You'd think that the more RAM the better with Photoshop but remember it's still 32bit code so it can't address a huge amount of RAM. I tried the other day to see how much I could get it to use and it topped out at 1.8Gb before it started going to the scratch disk. Obviously you still need some RAM for the OS etc but 4Gb is plenty at the moment.

Faster is better, but I don't think quad core will gain anything unless CS3 is optimised for that. IME dual core is great because a single app can only hog one processor and you can still do stuff, quad core is more difficult to get the benefit from.

photoshop has been multithreaded since cs2.

Unless you're doing a lot of processor intensive stuff (use the task manager to monitor it) then I'd stick with a c2d,probably 6350, and get about 4Gb of memory. Should get thiongs running nicely.....

CS2 and CS3 both definitely use 4 cores, my Macpro uses 2x Xeon Dual Core chips and photoshop flies on it...

Ive seen CS3 benchmarks that suggest 2->4 cores gives an almost perfect 100% boost, going 1 step further to 8 cores only gives 5% though... :(

You might be forgetting that you don't have to use all the cores for Photoshop only ;)

Ive noticed in CS3 you can allocate a certain about of RAM to photoshop before it used the HD. If you was to process a HDR image for example, wouldn't that just use 1 core. Though the idea was the other cores only used for other apps

E6850 without a doubt, it will be faster than the quad in normal usage as nothing takes use of the extra cores and will still be rapid in photoshop as well. I love mine :). Plus currently running mine easily overclocked to 3.6ghz

i got the E6850 in the end. I am waiting for my cooler to arrive tomorrow :D

Got my all built Now, Quad core running at 3.3GHz, 2GB Ram, 500GB HD, P5K Deluxe motherboard.

Runs great, have allocated 1.4gb of RAM to CS3 when its running, but have only got it to use 1.1GB in tests, so im not sure you would need more

Roll on affordable large solid state hard drives :D

Thanks to AndyD for cooler and RAM ;)
