Hi, i have just purchased a a imac at a value of just over £1000 .The seller as said that he cant accept responsibility for lost or dameaged items etc once he posts .
Now bearing that in mind i am quite happy to pay for a it to be insured ,and having only used Royal mail myself in the past i was looking for a decent company that have a good reputation for transporting , any help prior to arranging for this to be picked up would be apreciated. Thanks

The seller saying he can't accept responsibility is not on, He is the courier/postal customer and it is his responsibility until it is delivered to you.

Whichever service is selected (and insurance paid) should'nt make too much difference .... you will find good and bad references to them all! :D

Royal Mail Special Delivery, no brainer. Tracked, fully insured for a very reasonable cost, and highly reliable.

It is the seller's responsibility to deliver the item to you safely, but if he uses RMSD that's easy.

Arrange you own collection by a courier of your choice , You decide who , insurance value etc

Assuming you've bought this at distance, without seeing this, is it just my alarm bells that are ringing? "Not my fault, it was perfect when it left here, or worse, the box with bricks in it
For that sort of item I'd like to see it before parting with money

They are much of a similar outcome re insurance claims, unless you unpack and check in front of them it would be like getting blood out of a stone if there is damage , however the driver will do everything he can to be the way to his other 60 to 100 drops for the day...

Whoever books the courier has the responsibility to work with the courier ( as they are the couriers customer) if anything goes wrong.

That said if it being shipped in the original box they are designed with this in mind ( I used to work in a factory assembling computers and the packaging cost around 5 times the going rate as it was designed for the specific machine to survive a 4 metre drop etc etc).

Avoid yodel imo, Hermes are improving all the time.

Definitely DO NOT do that, you will be taking responsibility away from the seller.. something goes wrong you’re buggered.

I would be so p***ed off if I took the time to pack a product very well / Properly then a couried destroys it on route , How is this my fault , How am I responcible for something I have NO control over ?

Is it faulty? Is the seller looking for a "Not my problem!" opportunity when you get a duff delivery? /cynical

Sorry to delve a bit but is this the iMac that recently sold that says this in the listing

“ Please mail me for payment info. As payment information on my ebay is wrong and it won't let me change it for some reason, thanks happy bidding :)

If it is I would run a mile, have a breather then run another mile.

You do have control. Firstly you choose the carrier. Secondly you choose the level of insurance cover. Thirdly you choose how to package it.

My business sends about 15,000 cameras and lenses per year via post and courier. The number which are damaged or lost is absolutely miniscule.

It's just one of those issues that can either bite you on the arse, or not.

I've bought loads of things online and if I said i'd bought 1000, then I would also say that I'd reckon 999 of them would have had no issues. It's the nature of the 'courier' beast.

That said, as others have said, if the seller is already throwing issues at you before it's even been posted, then i'd walk away. Sometimes a good thing is just not that and you regret ever buying.

And if @strumstrum has found the right listing, all the more reason to leave it and look for someone that gives you more confidence

Do RM insure screens? A lot of couriers won't cover monitors or TV above a certain size.

Edit - for example parcel force exclude from damage compensation I know they're part of the same group :

Computer monitors – including laptop screens, all-in-one desktops and iMacs

Thanks all for the replies, I have contacted the seller and basically told him it was up to him to provide the insurance with posting , I know I would , he as postage cost at £12.50 I’m happy to pay the any extra to take the insurance cover at cost of item

It stinks, No matter how tempted you are, walk away and don't look back.

When you get the parcel (not if) video yourself opening it, examining it and trying it. Make absolutely sure EVERYTHING is as it should be.

But is the seller going to use a courier that insure electronics/computers/lcd screens.....? You might be paying insurance for something in the ‘exempt from insurance’ list...

Did you pay for item with Paypal?

If you go ahead with the sale I would make sure that not only do you video the box opening, you also have someone else with you as a witness

den is it not within travelling distance . tbh I wouldn't trust a used i.mac through the post .also what spec is it ,how old is it ,is it a ssd or a normal hard drive ,when mine went tits up on me last year I took it apart to retrieve the hard drive (a fairly simple op ) but as it was a normal h/d and fan assisted over the years it had accumulated tons of dust through the vents which caused the failure . a ssd avoids this problem .
also depending on age what version is it running we are now on high Sierra and depending on age you might not be able to update it further due to compatibility .wish you had asked first .

if the seller is being difficult over postage as well I would cancel the sale and look for one closer to home where you can inspect it before buying and pick up .and at the end of the day being a i.mac and knowing the longevity of them I would be tempted to buy new
