No
I have an Epoque underwater strobe kit -this model
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/epok/flash/es230ds.html

which I use when using my compact fuji underwater. It works by a fibre optic cable from the sensor of the camera flash to the unit.

Is there a way that I could use this with my Sony do you think? or is it completely no-go? As the flash unit is there and not being used at the moment thought I may be able to utilise it

you mean on the surface?

possibly - you'll be able to use the onboard flash on the sony to trigger this. I'm not sure what issues you'll have with this being designed to use underwater and optimised for that environment

sorry yes I meant on the surface. I dont think its like some torches etc that are best submerged to be used so think it can be used on top of the water.

I dont suppose you have any idea how I would get the sony to trigger it would you? I know its probably a long shot.

I've no real idea - but more because I've never used sony kit. The Fibre Optic cable only makes the onboard flash a more reliable trigger. Onboard flash underwater without the cable is not a reliable trigger. I think you'd use the onboard from your Sony to trigger with no need for the cable - you wouldn't have the diffusion and reflection issues that make the cable a requirement in water.

Underwater strobes tend to be more directionalised, and also more powerful then surface flashes, but you'll be able to overcome this. The last issue is you'll only be able to use this in manual mode.

Just looking at the link to your strobe - will you be able to mount it on a Sony OK and does the weight of it cause issues out of water?

Cheers

Hugh

thanks for the advice. I actually contacted the manufactures and they said it could be used if I wanted but it would be a very harsh light but gave no indication of how to do it . Not sure about the weight aspect as underwater its held on a tray and flexible arm. I just thought that as the unit cost about £200 and is just sitting there not being used I would try it if possible.I shall do some more investigation
