Cost of bank transfers

Today I went to the Lloyds bank in Cambridge to Bank Transfer £770 for a camera body, they informed the charge was £30 !!!!! I declined their most generous offer.

I went down the road to Nationwide who did it for free.

Learn from my nearly mistake - don't you just love banks.
 
Internet banking is indeed another option, but not all of us have or use it.
 
Relocated to obscurity....Only trying to stop people making the same mistake.
 
For CHAPS transfers it is £30. Faster payments are free. Remiss of them to not mention it.

What, you mean a bank offer a free service in place of one they can charge for. :naughty:
 
The numpty at the empty Lloyds Bank at Gonville Place Cambridge, went to great lengths to try find a way to do it for free and said there wasn't one,
He was either a conman or a d**khead, either way Lloyds is becoming an unattractive bank for me, beginning to wish I hadn't transferred from TSB

Chaps is still commonly used for very high value transactions, such as house purchases. Or When payment values are above faster transfer limits
 
surely just go the recipients bank and dump the cash over the counter...........

Having said that, other week I had £650 or so with half in coins to pay in to transfer to kids virgin account... norwich virgin - (now there's a thought) cannot take cash.. so pay into mine and write a cheque... was expecting a bit of a fight... "we cannot take so many coins" - didn't bat an eyelid!
 
I bank with Lloyds and have never been charged for a bank transfer, in fact I have bought a couple of items off this forum over the last twelve months using this method.

I bought my last car, (£23K), using my debit card, the transaction went through in seconds, which was a big surprise to the salesman.

was going to say this. a guaranteed same day transfer is £30 for chaps.

although most banks do fast transfers as standard (for free) these days. lloyds are morons though generally and probably dont offer this.
 
Like others I can't believe why they didn't offer a free service, I use HSBC online banking and have made a lot of transfers to various places and used BACS with no charges and the money has usually been transferred by the time I've sent an email or message telling the recipient the money was on the way. I've spent double or more than the OP on a BACS transfer so the limit can't be that small to require a different method.

I use Lloyds Internet banking and they certainly do Fast Transfers for free on there.

Lloyds customer, never been charged for a BACS transfer, whether 2 hour or 3 day. Do them all through online banking though, not over the counter.
 
in light of the above comments I'm tempted to write to Lloyds and complain
 
I'm with HBOS and they wanted to charge £25 to transfer money to a Santander account, I did it over the phone for free through faster payment scheme. The bank even recommended I do it over the phone or internet.
 
Never been charged in Nat West and contrary to other opinions very much value being able to go in a local branch

Don't bank online and no intention of starting, apart from being able to speak to someone in person, also don't want to see even more jobs go
