Hi all,

I would really need a way to repair a bunch of cr2 files. The problem is that I'm not even able to recover the jpeg preview from the files since I only see a black thumbnail. The files were shot on a wedding. I assume all hardware is fine since the problem occured only with the first bunch of the photos(they were copied to PC and deleted from the card), but all the rest of the photos shot the same day with the same camera and card are just fine. I already tried exiftool, cr2repair, FastStone Image Viewer, Hetman Photo Recovery, and a whole bunch of other software but they mostly only recover deleted files which I don't need. The files seems to be the regular size (around 25MB). I anyone has any idea or a tip for a paid service I'm willing to pay since I'm desparate to get the pictures back.

What software are you using to view the files.? Have you tried simply resaving them ( with a different name) to see if the full data is available. This should generate a fresh preview. If this fails I would suspect that the image file structure is corrupted in some way making it impossible for the file to be properly read . You may need to get in touch with a data recovery company to see if the files can be recovered. However before you do that try processing the images using XNView . For some reason I have found that this will read files that other applications wont.

failing that as I have said you may need a data recovery company. The one I used last year is DataWreck. These guys recovered some files on a card that had gone belly up big time. They used forensic level software to recover all 214 images for me. I'd give them a call first. They operate a no fix no fee service and are based in Stoke on Trent. Give them a ring and see if they can help. It cost me £99 to get the images back ( cheaper than a re shoot) .Their phone no is 01782 279 279
I would however be suspicious of the card. and consider not using it for irreplaceable images. Any card I have that gives the slightest concern gets dumped

What did you use to extract the jpeg? Can you upload a raw for us to try?
