Hi All :)!

A kind friend has given me Corel Paint Shop Pro Ultimate x7 because he has treated himself to the latest version - PSP x8. I had PSP x2 some years ago but it kept crashing on my Vista laptop so I uninstalled it. PSP x7 is fine on my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit PC.

I was just wondering why it never seems to get a mention here on TP ? Does anybody use it? I fully realise that it's not the PP program of choice for the professionals. However, it seems a pretty powerful option for an amateur or hobbyist. I have never used Lightroom or PS although I've seen them in action thanks to various photographer mates.

The kind friend also sent me two books, one of which is entitled "Corel PSP x7 for Idiots" :D! I have not taken offence. There are also, of course, a wealth of YouTube videos.

I find the program impressive; I've just mastered Magic Fill - wow!

I've used and use the following PP options: Irfanview, Paint.net, Photofiltre and Pixlr.

The main point: I'm just interested in any opinions about Paint Shop Pro from any members who've used it.

Thanks in advance for any comments :ty:!

I use PSPx6. It runs my old XP desktop to its limit and sometimes beyond but it's never crashed. Interestingly I previously had a very much older version that did (crash, that is). I find it very good for everything I need to do. The only drawback I've found is that for some of the more complex stuff in layers etc I really don't understand the help files and all the tutorials I've found are for Photoshop. I'm sure PSP does most, if not all, of the same stuff, just slightly differently. I didn't know there was an Idiots book - perhaps I should get it. I much prefer to learn from a book than a video (it's probably my age........). I've never used a recent version of Photoshop, though I do have Elements, but I really don't like it and virtually never use it, and I don't want or need the organising functions of Lightroom. Every time on here I see another thread about LR/PS misbehaving I just think 'nope!'. For me now new software is almost out of the question anyway because it probably isn't going to run on XP. I have Win10 on my laptop but don't want to buy a new desktop unless I really have to as I have a lot of very old software that just isn't going to run on Win10, and which I can't afford to replace. Catch 22! At the end of the day PP is PP, but you do need software you get on well with, or it just becomes a fight.

I've been using PSP for years. It's easy and effective. I'm still on X3 though. Do the newer versions allow you to do more with 16bit images? That's really been the only thing I've found limiting to some extent as a lot of the options in X3 require 8 bit images. I use PSP alongside Lightroom and PS CS2, although the latter rarely gets used for anything because it's so painful to use.

Yes, sometimes it seems like many posters here think there is only one application people should use. And some have even said that. As if we all have the same requirements.

Just carry on using what suits you. Lots of people here use a variety of different non-Adobe products. There is no need to follow the pack.

Thank you for the reply, Richard :)!

I'm not entirely sure but I found these discussions that may (or may not) be of interest:

I take 16-bit images but usually reduce their size before editing. As I've only had PSP x7 for a couple of days, I can't comment from personal experience. I can ask a friend, though, who's used PSP for donkey's years ;)!
