Just found that Corel AfterShot 3 can be obtained for free for a short time from:

http://lp.corel.com/as3

Not sure how long the offer will last and you will have to subscribe to their mailing list to get it. If you keep the e-mail they send you you can always unsubscribe at a later date. You download an installation program which, when run, will install Aftershot 3. I found the Aftershot 3 stored as a "*.zip" in my Temp files and was able to unsip it and keep it. You can then run it at a later date. Make sure to keep the "Activation Code" that you are sent for later use.

AfterShot 3 is a 64bit version and there are also some free plu-ins that go with it that can be obtained from:

http://www.aftershotpro.com/en/plugins/

All but the Graduated filter are free, and this will cost $19.99.

Hope this may help someone.

Thanks to the original poster on a different forum.

Thanks for that. did your email code arrive straight away ?

Not received anything after 10 minutes or so.

Dougie.

Didn't work with my Nikon D500 RAW files.

I tried AfterShot when it first came out and later adopted LIghtroom, since it did a much better job of highlight recovery.
I haven't tried this newer version yet, but I'm interested to see if Corel have made any significant improvements.
At the time, one of the other downsides to AfterShot was that Corel were VERY slow in updating to accomodate raw files from new cameras.
That may still be the case, hence no support (yet) for D500 raws.

I was interested in taking another look at AfterShot so I just downloaded it, after all you can't go wrong at the price!
Lo and behold, although it works with all my other raw files, it does not recognise the raw files from my Canon 80D.

So it looks like Corel are till in the slow update cycle that they have always been in - most disappointing, or does it mean I need to buy ASP3 Pro to get 80D support?
The Nikon D500 and Canon 80D are hardly new models, both having both been on the market for over a year.

A quick check reveals the highlight recovery of ASP is no better than it ever was, which is why I went with Lightroom.

Quick update: I found that in order to process 80D raws I need to "upgrade" to AfterShot Pro3 (Presumably the same applies for D500 files) - I don't think I'll bother.
