An interesting discussion has arisen relating to sport event photography in our area. A group of us have gone to stock car racing for a few years and all of a sudden an announcement came out that it has been decided that fans are no longer allowed to post images on Facebook pages due to copyright issues. This will also be extending to race night photographs and specific permission must be sought from a member of the organisation before entering the racetrack with photographic and/or recording equipment (i.e. mobile phones).

Some of the locals are up in arms as they take camera’s along to photograph relatives racing, and it’s done on a purely non-commercial basis (some do share images among themselves). The discussion has turned to whether this was (a) a terms and condition of entry issue, or (b) is it really a copyright issue?

It’s an interesting debate (in a twisted way). Me, I honestly don’t know, but I’d be interested hear what you think – if anyone is interested that is

Simple, owner of the track or the governing body can do what they like, you either accept the conditions or start watching something else, end of.

Harsh but true, its happening in most sports, google image rights.

That was my thought. It was interesting standing listening to two HUGE members of the travelling community discuss the finer points when the security guy said they would delete the images on their card if they took any photo's next week.

strange.. the stock car racing i go to actualy mention in the advertising.. bring a camera :)

Racing usually lasts until 5pm, sometimes longer, we have a Track Shop, Toilets and Burger Vans etc. Though no seating is provided, people bring fold away garden chairs, or just wander around the outside of the track and in the pits, watching cars being repaired and chatting to the drivers. Its a great place to bring a camera too and not expensive at all.

They may be able to stop you taking pictures, but they won't be able to delete images without a court order. :nono:

Unless someone knows different.

I don't think I'd enjoy them suddenly putting up restrictions. :shake: But that's me.

If the photography was a big part of the experience of being there, then I'd not bother, and as has been said, vote with your feet.

Someone said to me that if the T&C are on the ticket which you buy at the gate, you obviously don't get to read them until you've paid your money. Which doesn't give you the opportunity to accept the t&C before entry. So that invalidates the T&C. I'd be interested to know if that's true, but it seems logical. I guess if they put up 'no photography' signs at the entrance, then that's fair, but just to say something over the tannoy doesn't seem quite right to me.

Interestingly, I was watching the Milan/Arsenal game and the cameras focussed on a couple of oriental ladies in the crowd, one sporting a Canon with a 70-200mm on it. Obviously the Dataco restrictions don't apply abroad, or are they less bothered?

If they announce on the Tannoy, or come up and ask you to stop, then you stop. :nono: Even if they just let you in without a ticket to private property, they can make up whatever rules they want. They may not be overt that there are restrictions, but once you've been made aware, probably by a tap on the shoulder, or even worse over a Tannoy, :$ then you abide by their rules or leave.

I can't see UEFA being less lenient with their photo restrictions than the Premier League, as like the PL it was set up just to make money, but you never know.

I think just like here though, it could have been the luck of the draw for the lady, sometime you get away with it, sometimes you don't.
