Thought I'd start off with an easy one to have a go at

Ok - here's a first one then from me - and an easy one to try too as you hardly need get out of bed

Quite simple really, it's a mix of flash & ambient lighting. The ambient being both the window behind me & room lighting too

The trick is to meter for your room, and then introduce flash slightly more powerful than the room's ambient lighting exposure so your subject 'pops' out a bit

For ease - this was simply shot with a speedlight mounted on the hotshoe, with the swivel/tilt head pointing up & behind me - which gives the softest spread of light (I find it's often a good idea to bounce the flash not just off the ceiling, but right back up into the wall behind you too)

That ok ???

 nice first challenge Dave and something anyone with a flash gun can have a go at. I will have to get my model on the bed, he will love it :naughty: :D Failing that, not sure I can get her in a wedding frock, but I can certainly get young Ms Yv to pose and use same technique.

I thought the idea was to replicate the type of shot & lighting - if it's to match or better it, I wouldn't have chosen one with such a limiting attire

There is a bit of a 'trick' to pulling these off well, which many of my club members don't realise, so it'll be interesting to see what comes in

 I think there is quite a bit of tongue in cheek going on here. Mind you for me, the bed makes sense, the window is behind me as per your description

Yes - I was thinking that what you should be doing is positioning someone in a room with window light, and adding flash for effect - but still only using an on-camera speedlight so most people can have a go

quick job earlier, unfortunately there was a lot of strong sun coming in the windows as it was early evening and the only way to not get window in the shot is to be in front of it and that meant I had to ceiling bounce....... but a reply at least

yeah he was gutted, actually the conversation went more along the lines of what are you doing why are you taking a picture of me......

Cool thread. I'll watch this with interest.

I hope not ..... I want a go ...... anything to try and understand how to use my recently purchased sb900. Tried it stobist on a Church Lychgate and that seemed to go down like a lead balloon so just got to convince someone to pose on a bed for me? As the missus and the kids run for cover every time I get my camera out this is going to be the challenge!!!!

camera in manual so you can pick you're ambient then either use ttl with exp comp or manual, ttl is easy once you know it, manual is easier to pick up but a pain to use

So Dave is the camera in Manual, and the lighting also in Manual so that Ettl doesn't kick in and mess it up? Asking because I can never master these sorts of shots

I would have replied sooner but yesterday was a 12 hour Wedding and most of this morning TP hasn't worked for me :(

Nope - not in manual at all just relying on iTTL (eTTL I think Canon calls it)

When you've got time, as I did here, I simply metered the room as I wanted it (could have used exp comp to underexpose the ambient a bit, but in auto I simply metered a darker spot and locked the exposure) and then boosted the flash a little

Simples :D
