Converting from RAW - Problems

Not so much a problem, but a niggle, at which i'm getting frustrated with.

I took some candid's at a mates, mum's wedding a month or so back, and as a present to say thanks to her for letting me take photos, I'm going to get them printed up and put into a little album for her to do as she pleases with.

In the RAW editor, they look spot on, nice, sharp etc, i'm happy with them. I converted them to JPEG, resized them, gave them a sharpen and posted them on here a couple of days after I took them, they looked the same as they did in the RAW editor, nice, sharp etc.

However, obviously I want the best possible quality when printing, so you print with the high res images right?

Frankly, the quality of the converted JPEG's look horrible, they don't look as smart, they've lost sharpness etc, but I know this is to be expected?

So, i've started organising for them to be printed, doing any PP to the converted JPEGS etc. I thought a sharpen would solve my problem with the softness, but it hasen't, they still don't look anything like they do in the RAW editor, and to be honest, i'm upset with it. (Not literally, but you get my point).

Can anyone help me out?

I'm going to try and get a print screen of the RAW photo and the JPEG photo side by side, hopefully showing the difference in quality.

RAW on the left, JPEG on the right. That's after sharpening the JPEG in photoshop too, i''m sure it's not just my eyes.

Ah you are using two different programmes to view two different files!! Not very comparative!

Try opening the same jpeg in the two different programmes and then compare them.

You mean open them both in the same program?

Nope open the converted jpeg in windows fax viwer thing and then at the same time have it open in digital photo thing....and then see how the same file looks in two different programmes like I said

My apologies fella, read it wrong. Gimme a momento.

Don't use Windows Picture & Fax Viewer its abysmal at displaying pictures....

I use IrfanView which is free, simple and small and great for this sort of thing.

But surely that's part of the problem  Currently Little Man is comparing his photo in DPP and Windows Picture Viewer, which will give very different results. As RV says, Windows Picture viewer is not to be recommended for viewing photos accurately

DPP wil apply sharpening when displaying a scaled down image, WP&FV doesn't which explains the soft look. Compare both at 100% zoom and there probably won't be as much difference.

Well i think the proof is in the pudding. I think that is the problem

Yes, firstly it isn't really designed for photographs, so doesn't take account of any processing at all.

But, also, if you view an image "fit to screen" for example, what is displays is very poor. However, if you zoom into 100% it will look better, but not as good as it should.

So it's looking like that's the problem then?

Cheers guys & girls. I'll download that viewer and go from there.

I got the impression he was having the raw file open in one programme and the jpeg open in the other and then comparing the two. Hence why I said use the two different programmes and compare the jpeg (it is the jpeg he is having problems with)

That's what I was doing fella, but seeing as someone mentioned windows fax viewers ***** for photos, i've tried that Ifran and it looks much better.

Cheers for your help though.

I know where people are getting confused.
I think what they mean is you had the RAW in one program and the Jpeg in another program, what was suggested is to use the 2 different programs but switch the RAW picture to the Jpeg version, so you have the same Jpeg open in both that way you can tell if it's the jpeg thats the problem or the software.
