Hi Everyone, I've joined up here to see if anyone can advise me how to convert literally hundreds of my dads old 35mm slides which I've inherited to digital files. Its going to be a lengthy task, so is there a particular piece of kit with a USB/scanner to do the job?

I use a Nikon Coolscan V ED and Vuescan from http://www.hamrick.com.

The Coolscan comes with software but its a bit eccentric.

This setup works Ok but is very tedious.

Prepare yourself for some long nights.

I had to do this a couple of years ago for a friend who wanted loads of 1950s slides converted, got a dedicated slide scanner but it still took ages, then of course came the repiar work

There are scanners you can buy with loaders, auto feeders that you can set running overnight.
Can't think of one I'd recommend, I'm not into 35mm really, but the coolscans have auto feeder attachments as an aftersales extra.
There are quite a few 35mm scanners to choose from, you'll have to root about a bit to find one that fits your budget, coolscans are expensive.

Like John-oh said be prepared for some long nights.
I have a Scanwit 2720S which is now quite a few years old. I does a good job using the Vuescan software but boy does it take forever. To give you a feel for the amount of time you need from slide scan to finished, cleaned printable picture I do about 12 slides per hour.
