What’s the best way to control multiple speedlites from the same manufacturer but different models bought over time and have various evolutions of camera/light comms technology?

i was thinking a pocketwizard setup unless someone knows differently?

What Mike said; some brands may be less compatible with the triggers, though I don’t have the details.

As an addendum to this does anyone know why pocketwizards especially the tt5 are significantly cheaper in the second hand market for canons as opposed to nikons?

I thought that today as well! Like massively cheaper! I think the newer Canon cameras have built in wireless flash control so no need for radio triggers.

Just saw that there is a tt6 just for Canons. Might explain why Canon users are trying to dump tt5s

depends on the brand of speedlight but Godox can do that cheaper than pocket wizard
Mike

^^^This. Godox is not only way cheaper, but a better option these days. Either with a transmitter/trigger and a bunch of receivers, or do what many of us have done and replace everything with Godox flash units with built-in receivers.

I’m not going to argue with you and I’m sure your right but having tried godox they just felt cheap and seemed overly complex (for my simple needs) pocket wizards literally have no buttons bar the channel dial and are built to a high quality.

Again I’m not arguing against you I’m just saying for me pocket wizards are my preferred option.

That's cool, but you did ask ;) So long as you know what the options are now.

Just be aware of PW's compatibility issues, particularly RF interference problems with Canon flash guns - they are not trivial, some worse than others. See here under Speedlite Compatibility.

Definitely Godox
Simple to use and controllable from camera position
Versatile and big ecosystem
Lower volume of equipment i.e Not a load of recievers and batteries for those
Less stuff and contacts to fail
Id go as far as saying i personally would dump that other brand and switch

Nikon here.

I also prefer that PW use aa batteries rather than coin batteries which is a big plus (nb I don’t know if the more recent Godox ones have switched to aa).

I think the Godox transmitters and receivers all use AA now, and have done for some time.
In their flashguns (which all have built in receivers and transmitters ) several models have two variants, one using AA and a second using a Lithium battery - giving improved capacity, etc, (in exchange for being tied to the specific battery and charger).
Another potential big plus point for Godox is their brand specific models interoperability. So a Godox flash with a Canon / Nikon / Sony etc. specific fit hotshoe can be triggered by a Godox trigger (or flash) on a Nikon / Sony / Canon, etc - including TTL and HSS - so if you swap brands, you only need to get a new trigger for hte new brand, and everything else will continue to work off-camera.

I would have said it's the other way around. I still have a couple of CR2450 batteries for the PW Mini TT1. I bought a few because they're not that easy to get in a hurry. On the other hand, Godox use AAs and now all their speedlites are available with a lithium option for massive improvement to recycle time and capacity.

ps Sorry that I was confusing you with the OP previously :)

That’s fine it seems like things have changed a lot since I had to originally choose between the two and whilst I felt at the time Godox was quite poor in comparison they have obviously come on leaps and bounds and I think my choice would be quite different today.

One thing that my particular pocket wizards don’t do is ttl or hss. Now I don’t need ttl but high speed sync would be very useful after doing some wide open portraits outside recently of my son.
