Morning,

I don't usually stray into the light (as it were) but I have a question.

I intend to shoot a series of portraits of my closest friends using a Ross Ensign 12-20 folder from 1953. Now I'm sure that its not possible to trigger a flash with said camera so I'm thinking that a continuous light set up would be the way to go. I will be shooting against a black background and I want the images to be fairly moody and I will use window light and a reflector where possible.

So the questions are, would continuous lighting work best and what kind of light should I buy? Budget? Less than £100, I already have a small softbox, umbrellas and stands.

Cheers

Andy

Hey Andy,

If you can't trigger the flashes (so no sync port or hot shoe) then continuous is your only option.

I would suggest borrowing or hiring if you're only using it for a limited time to be fair. Anything under 100 isn't likely to be much good in the long run.

Are you shooting colour film with it?

Regards

Danny

Thanks Danny, I'm shooting b&w, not sure which yet but Adox 50 is looking favourite so far. Never thought of hiring any suggestions as to where I can get them from.

Cool cool. Black and white will be easier if you use cheaper lights because colour temp won't be such an issue.

My usual hire suspects are theflashcentre, calumet, and procentre.

Do you know what lighting effect you are trying to achieve? If you're talking about filled window light then usually very soft :)

If you're looking to hire continuous lighting then TV & Video hire shops will be a better bet than the usual photo places. They won't be cheap though.

Thanks Barney, I'll take a look.

Ok after having a good look round I think I have decided on these.

Interfit INT116 Super Cool-lite 5 Head

Has anyone used them, particularly for film portraits?

Cheers

You might like to take a look at the Lencarta equivalent

Very interesting Garry. Couple of questions, does it come with bulbs and what sort of stand would be suitable.

Cheers

Andy

1. Yes
2. Any, it fits onto the standard 16mm spigot. Boxed weights are 1.17kg for the unit itself, 1.44kg for the softbox and just over 2kg for all 4 bulbs, so the total weight is only about 4.5kg without the packaging

Thanks Garry, I'm convinced all I have to do now is convince the wife.......

Andy

Garry, does the Lencarta video light thing take S-Fit accessories?

No. Because of the physical size of the bulbs - and there are 4 of them - only the supplied softbox can be used.
