Hi hope someone can help me?

I have a Sony DSC-H9, I will be getting a DSLR in November but in the meantime would like to do some studio style photos of my 8month old daughter.

Is my only option without a DSLR to use continuous lights?

I like the look of this one http://www.lencarta.com/continuous-lights/con003-cool-light-5lite-softbox-light/index.php

Would that be ok? Or would flash lighting work with my non dslr camera??

I also need a backdrop if anyone wants to suggest?

I have a budget of £500 for lighting & backdrop....

Flash would give you better results as it will 'freeze' the subject. If you have a flash synch connection on the camera it will work via a cable - or if the cam has a hotshoe you could use a radio trigger.

then why not spend the money on a DSLR now and take pics with available light - add the lighting kit in November.

Good advice.

I'll add a bit more, it's the same advice for gentlemen contemplating the purchase of continuous lighting for photographing people as the old 'Punch' advice for gentlemen contemplating matrimony...

Don't

Look at a Nikon within your budget! :)

why panic???
the sony is a cracking bridge camera

you can obtain a more difuse effect with the onboard flash by using something like this

idea 2

but if you have 500 notes and want to spend it a nice canon entry level and a 50mm 1.8 would do nicely
but you're still without a seperate flash

you can buy a firefly (kinda expenive but they do work) which is an IR flash trigger that you fire from the onboard flash with an IR filter on it. PM alastair.b on here he uses one for caving with his G10 ;)
