Just spent a frustrating hour trying transfer photos from wife's phone to pc/laptop, PC recognized (still couldn't transfer photos) but laptop doesn't .

Any advice would be appreciated.

how? via USB?
well both should recognise it. there is a driver on there too,
if it's not installing try using the PC companion which will include a driver installation

on my xperia S I find it painfully slow anyway
why not just just file expert or ES explorer and FTP from the wifi network in your house
it picks up shared drives without any problems in my experience.
then there is no USB issue and it's just a wifi push to the network drive

If you have wifi in the house then download an app called air DROID on to the phone.
Follow instructions to URL insert pass code and transfer between phone and computers over wifi.

Once logged on you can access the phones files from the computer and download to your hearts content.

It's what I use and it's works perfectly and saves in USB faff
