Yes
OK, we have an old Dell laptop with a cd drive and a newer netbook/notebook (just what is the difference apart from ours not having a cd drive ?)
Daughter wants to be able to use the cd drive with the notebook, so is there a cable to connect the two - usb at one end and what looks like a 40-odd pin plug on the other end, and if so what is it called ?
Would it be easier just to get a proper external cd/dvd drive - she just wants to be able to play her sims3 game and I am told that the disc needs to be running in order to play...

Thanks as always !

Yep, you can get external CD/DVD cases complete with cables etc on Ebay for a few quid.
Check your old drive to see if it's sata connections or the older style. Pop the drive in the casing and away you go!

Les McLean said in another thread in this section earlier today 'As most of the computer gurus on TP come from the top end of the gene pool'

Once again I have been given what sounds like sound advice - thanks to you both !

The external drive is worth having anyway, you will probably find it writes faster so will be good for backups.
However if you can get the netbook and laptop networking by router, you might be able to see the Laptop disc drive over the network and play/write that way.

A quick look on ebay is showing me several cd/dvd readers at around a tenner so that has to be the way to go for me and for ease...!
Writing to disc isn't going to be an issue as we have 2 other machines with cd writers.
Cheers !
