So I just got a shiny new Galaxy S7 tablet :)

I plugged it into my computer monitor via USBC and it launched into Dex (which is surprisingly nice). But what I want to do is watch iPlayer on the monitor from the tablet - try as I might I can't get sound. What am I doing wrong? I've tried:

  1. Running in Dex - other apps will play sound in Dex but iPlayer won't run under Dex - even the website version.
  2. Running under Android - iPlayer works perfectly but there's no sound
  3. Routing iPlayer sound specifically to the tablet speakers - still no sound
Any ideas? Is it the cable? (BTW monitor has sound and it's turned on - a computer wired via HDMI can make sound).

I use Chromecast to connect my Samsung tablet to my TV.

Bit confused, you say TV in the title then mention computer monitor in the thread.

What exactly do you want to watch it on?

DeX seems to a proprietary Samsung thing for connecting their devices to TVs and monitors. Googling 'samsung dex sound' brings up a few guides that may or may not help. A Chromecast is definitely worth considering for the price - a lot of apps (iPlayer, YouTube, Prime Video, Now TV, Netflix, Eurosport Player, various dedicated media players, etc.) support a casting mode that generally works well, and once the stream starts the Chromecast usually does most of the hard work rather than your device.

Good point :)

What I really want to do is connect it to a TV so that when I'm away from home I can watch iplayer etc on a big screen.

Since I don't (yet) have a USB-C to HDMI cable, I wired it into my computer monitor using the USB-C - USB-C cable I had and expected it "just to work".

It becomes very easy with a smart TV on same wifi - but then you can watch iPlayer on the TV anyway.
Before smart TV I used to sometimes connect a laptop via HDMi input, I would assume your USB-C to HDMi cable idea should work.
Is the TV USB input working at all e.g. With a flash drive you might have to search for it or enable it.

Yes Dex is a bit quirky though kind of amazing. It turns an Android tablet into something that looks like what I imagine a Chromebook would be. But it also gets in the way. Time was, you plugged a tablet into a TV and it just mirrored the screen.

Chromecast would certainly be worth the price if I needed this functionality regularly. As it is I have a couple of Firesticks I never use because both TVs in the house are "smart" and also have Virgin cable boxes plugged in.

Yeah that's what baffling me - I'm pretty sure it should work. Ah well, I can always watch TV on a tablet :)
