I am starting to get more serious about my photography and although very much still being only an amateur, I would like to get myself a lighting set-up. I have a Nikon D90 with SB600 flash but that is it for now. I like to take kind of product photography. Things like Lego and flowers ect, some macro, but also would like a set-up to be able to cope with some portrait shots.

My question to all you with much more experience than is how to go about getting started. Am I better going for strobe lights or constant lights and also, what is the benefits with one over the other? Also, would I need triggers? should I go for a kit or is it best to build up one light box at a time? I have a budget of £100 or so but would rather get better stuff then have to keep upgrading so my budget is flexible to get the right kit.

Any help would be really welcome as Im sure you can probably see, I really don't have much knowledge in this area yet and I don't want to go out and start spending money on things I don't really need. Thanks

Hi John. Best to start with going on a lighting course. It will help you understand what is required and how lighting can be done with one light and several. Then look at what is available within your budget. Good luck.

Thank you both for your replies. I have looked at the strobist blog and it's great. I think I need to spend a bit of time on there reading up and I will update my location when I login on my computer.
