I am looking to buy a new Base Unit, have a good monitor so not looking for a whole package.
My use of a computer is uploading my pictures, using PS and general messing on the internet,I am not very techie which is why I would welcome some advice.
Budget of £500-£600.

Thanks

Not sure this is the right forum really, but for that money you could put yourself together a superb bit of kit. Drop me a PM if you want some advice/help.

I got a Dell XPS 420 for just over £600 rescently, awesome machine, has a Quad-core processor (basically 4 processors) so it's stupidly fast.

Also runs any game I can find on ultra-high settings.

For what you need you don't need to splash out on an XPS, they are designed for gaming, but Dell make good PCs and are very cheap for what you get, especially if you are just getting the desktop without a monitor.

The Dell Inspiron 530 seris would be good for your needs:

I did a search thinking the forum may have a computer section seeing as us Digital users use it to process pics.

Thanks for the advice.:)

For that sort of dosh you should be able to get yourself a monster 'puter. And I'd say go for the best graphics card you can find and as much RAM as you can fit in the thing.

http://www.computerplanet.co.uk

spec it up EXACTLY how you want! I just got a monster with AMD dual core, 4gigs of ram, decent graphics, etc, etc... Like you, didnt need a monitor, and was very impressed with service, communication and final result! I love it, super quick, opens CS3 in the blink of an eye and just does what I want it to do....cost...inclusinf delivry and XP 64bit [for specific reasons], under £600!

I could name you up some spec's but you don't really want to build if you have never built before on your own (trust me, someone else there always helps first time )

I would go with Dell or like LL said, they are a great company

But if you can pick up a motherboard that takes Dual-SLi and takes about 4Gb-8Gb Max you could build up from there and get yourself a wicked piece of kit.

DUAL 8800GT/8900GX2 yum yum yum yummy  (Daydream over :D)

But that is serious overkill for what you want

Asus Maximus Formula Intel X38

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "Energy Efficient SLACR 95W Edition" 2.40GHz

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Dual Channel Kit

Western Digital Raptor X 150GB 10000RPM SATA 16MB Cache(WD1500AHFD)

BFG GeForce 9800 GX2 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail

These listing are overkill but it is well worth it, won't need to upgrade for a while

Does that do anything for you?? Does for me :D

EDIT:

Am i loosing it???? I am not even sure if them parts will F_L_A_G together?? It is just a quick list i wiped together in a few minutes just to give you an idea of what you can get for a little bit of money

Shall i go to sleep now? I'll answer that for you.....YES :D

If you aren't planning on playing any games, you don't need a super expensive graphics card. You can buy a simple £50 card and it will perform exactly the same as a £400 card in windows, obviously games will benefit from a more expensive card. Something like an 8500GT will most likely do exactly what you need which leaves more money for RAM, CPU, Mobo etc.

I doubt you'll need an SLi or Crossfire motherboard (i.e. it has two slots for graphics cards), because it doesn't sound like you're a hardcore gamer. Those systems mean you buy two graphics cards and link them together which is probably overkill for what you said you wanted.

You'll probably find that you don't need 4Gb of RAM at the moment (32 bit operating systems can only address 3.5Gb or so anyway), but it won't hurt. 64 Bit operating systems can make use of it however, so it really depends whther you get Vista 64 installed on the machine. I'd say get it anyway (the RAM, not Vista), but it depends on whether you're sacrificing something else that might be more useful (like extra HDD space).

Stick with Intel CPU's as they are the best of the bunch at the moment. I built nothing but AMD machines for 10 years, but whilst their CPU's are excellent value for money, the Intel equivalents are simply faster and better (unfortunately ;)). I've just put a Q6600 in my machine and it's pretty special, though the dual cores are also excellent.

If you want some advice on a spec, post it here and I'm sure everyone else will be happy to chip in with some opinions.
