Now I know that there a million and one books/dvd's etc on using software tools in the processing of one's output but are there any sources of material that would help a poor newbie on how to think about composing a great shot in the first place?

Google 'composition tips' and there will be some useful sites thrown up in the results.

If you want to read a book, 'The Photographer's Eye' by Michael Freeman is a very good and insightful read.

That's a great one.The exercises are particularly useful, too.
