I'm only going to be an occasional user, but want to get a tele-zoom to use either on my XT-1 or my D800.

The choice is between the Nikon 70-300 ED VR and the Fuji 55-200mm. Allowing for the difference in sensor size, both will give about the same angle of coverage. The Fuji wins on size, weight and aperture, but loses to the Nikon on price.

But how do they compare optically? Anyone have experience of both lenses?

The D800 will give you more effective reach if you want to crop as it's much higher MP.

I have both, although I use a D750 rather than an 8** (had an 800 but swapped it for a Fuji system - including a 55-200!) Due to the size and weight advantage, it's the Fuji system that get used these days, although I now use an 18-135 and a 100-400 rather than the 55-200 (which accompanied an 18-55) since I can now cover 10mm - 800mm with just 3 lenses and a couple of teleconverters.

Before I got the 18-135 and the 100-400, I used the 55-200 on the X-T1 and X-T2 rather than the 70-300 on the Nikon unless I wanted/needed the slight benefits the Nikon system offered in terms of AF speed (now improved on the Fujis by firmware upgrades) and the lack of VF blackout (again improved with firmware in the Fujis). In real life, it's very hard to tell any difference optically, even at A3+ print size. I prefer the Fuji JPEGs to those from the Nikon as well as preferring to lug the Fuji system round rather than the Nikons!!!

Thanks. That makes a lot of sense. I love many things about the D800, most of all its resolution, but not the carrying it around bit. And as you say, the Fuji's jpgs are just wonderful.
