Now that I've got a nice new 30D I could do with some faster CF cards. What are the specifications ? ,there is nothing I can find in the owners manual about transfer speeds.

I don't want to go & buy the extreme-super-pro-fastest-turbo-nutter-deluxe card as it may be a waste of speed / money, so can anybody point me at facts / figures ?



Ps . I never thought I'd find a 30D so attractive , normally a 34C sort of guy ;)
 
The price has come down so much in resent years, that I don't think there is any reason to buy cheap unbranded cards.

Personally I use SanDisk Extreme III which you can get 2Gb ones for around £20- £25 now

I think you need to decide what sort of pictures you wanna take first for instance there are some very cheap 4GB CF cards on the market at the moment and have found they are fine for normal photographyt but suffer when trying to do continous frame as their write times are obv not the highest. I also have a 2GB 80x CF which I have found to be satisfactory for most action shots (motorbikes, waterskiing etc). Would suggest you buy one of each level if can afford and the biggest in both you can afford, especially if you are shooting in RAW (extra space for large size etc). Places to look are www.ebuyer.com, www.play247.com and sure there are a host more that people on here can point you at. There are a few webbies with performance figures like the sandisk site but like most things unless your really at the pro end would you actually notice that it didn't write / read at 4 gazillion billionths of a nanosecond fatser than the cheaper one :)

Hi , I wasn't looking for the el-cheapo stuff just wanted to avoid throwing money at leading edge speeds if I didn't need to.

I'll have a look at the Extreme III cards , digitaldepot is only 5 mins away :)

Already got 2 x 1Gb & 1 x 4Gb cards for my 300D , just looking for the "write speed" :D to make best use of the 30D fps
 
If you look in your camera manual, you'll see Canon recommend you use their own CF cards which is really daft as they only make them in tiddler sizes, certainly nothing which will cope with a DSLR.

I queried this with Canon UK and they told me the cards they actually recommend are Sandisk which are the ones I go for. The Ultra 11 are plenty fast enough, but watch where you get 'em from, there are more forgeries knocking about than the genuine ones.
 
I don't think slower cards will make much noticeable difference in the camera tbh. Where you will notice a difference though is in upload speeds to your PC, and opening RAW files can get painfully slow.

Thanks , I'll have a shop around for the Ultra III , give myself some head room :thumbs:
 
Be careful on ebay. I picked up a 2 gig Sandisk for silly daft money at the time and it's obviously slower than my others. My own fault - if something looks too good to be true... :shrug:

These forgeries are so good and so widespread that a lot of retailers don't realise they're not selling the real thing. Somewhere like 7dayshop should be fine and usually a good price.
 
I'm still mainly using ultra II's in the 1D, plenty fast enough and cheap as chips now.
