I note that the list of goods in the virtual 'shopping basket' has been changed to reflect the changing tastes for the British public and digital compact cameras have been taken off the list as most people take photos on their phones now. Shame, but a sign of the times I suppose.

An anomaly in the list is that sanitary towels have now been included but tampons have been taken out (pun not intended). I can understand why people use fewer digital cameras but sanitary products? How odd.

A more surprising thing would be if compact cameras were still on.

I took my waterproof compact with me to the Isle of Wight festival last year as:

a) it was going to be p***ing down all weekend
b) we were staying on a boat on a jetty and had to make a crossing to the island every morning on a tiny RIB.
c) we were going to be drinking all weekend and it's drop proof.
d) the battery on my then phone was appalling and using that as my main camera would have killed it.

Anyway... almost every time I took the camera out, someone would say something along the lines of "Blimey, I've not seen anyone use an actual camera for years"

I still use a premium compact about fifty percent of my photographic time, a Fuji X100V. I defy any phone camera to come even close. NB the other 49.9% of use is my Nikon DSLR, the last 0.01 is on my phone -- pictures of the dog rolling around on the bed and the like.

My X100v is my main camera also, but we are not representative of the British public as a whole, who are happy with phone snaps.

ONS have some notes on this specific topic

ONS said:
In other cases, removal does not necessarily imply that the markets for these goods and services are very small or declining significantly. Some items have been removed to make way for new additions to the baskets within the same grouping. For example, the postage charges item is being replaced by new items for letter and parcel handling services. The aim is to enable us to capture price quotes from a wider range of parcel courier services and to produce a more detailed analysis. Another example is tampons, which have been replaced by sanitary towels. These attract greater expenditure and are currently more representative of feminine hygiene products.

Wonder if its because sanitary products are now free
