Compact camera or Flip for HD video?

My wife and I are expecting our first offspring in a few weeks time and fancy getting some sort of video camera to capture a few memories.

I'd originally started looking at Flips and their competitors in the sub £100 sector but there is a bewildering choice. I'm also wondering if our money would be just as well spent on a compact camera that offers HD video but not sure if video quality will be compromised?

So two questions really.

Will a dedicated camcorder give us better video than a compact camera?

Any recommendations for either? Sub £100 ideally.
 
If you can afford it, try an iPhone 4 or 4S.

I can recommend the Sony Bloggie. Such a great little camera and I personally think it can take the flips market share. 1080p video with image stabilisation and great build quality! :)

Not been massively impressed with the iphone in low light but maybe the mini camcorders aren't much better?

Will take a closer look at the bloggie. Seems to do well in the which test.
 
4S is pretty good in low light, but they have ridiculous battery problems right now.

My wife's iphone is due an upgrade but O2 are totally out of stock so she may not be getting one now. Still inclined to get a separate camera but it would have been nice to see the 4s in action first. What is the battery issue they're having?
 
It's in relation to the location services that come with the phone. In an iPhone 4S, iOS5 (the new operating system for iPhones) causes insane waste of battery resources and makes a full charge last about 7 hours. Comparably, the iPhone 4 has atleast a day of use (16-20 hours).

It's a problem that will be fixed, but for the mean time iPhone 4S users will just have to carry around their charger :)
