Ok, my grandmother would like a digital camera. She does painting, and likes to take photos to work from. Budget is £300 or less. However, she doesn't like LCDs as you 'can't see them in the sun', so it needs a standard-style viewfinder. Preferably not too big.

My money would be on the Canon G7. What do other people think?

I would go for the older Canon Powershot A550 - you can get one for around £90 on Amazon - plus they are a little bit bulkier which your gran may prefer as it might be easier for her to handle than a small light one.

If she didn't need a viewfinder I would have suggested a Casio as they have a "simple" mode which makes it real easy for anyone to use.

(I needed a cheap but good point and shoot - bought the Sony CyberShot DSC W55 for £110 - but did a lot of online research)

if you can find a canon ixus 60 then they have a viewfinder

i need to find one for my gran before christmas as thats what shes getting as well!

The panasonic LX2 doesn't have a viewfinder but does have a sort of turbo mode for the LCD. Surprisingly it actually works and you can see it in the sunshine. It also has a mode for looking at the LCD from the angle you get when you hold it above your head.

I just thought this might be of use as compacts have such small chips that the viewfinders are often so small as to be worse than useless.

A second "vote" for a Canon 570 IS. Nice little camera, AA batteries in case you forget to recharge
